I have recently bought a trigano tribute campervan as a 2009 120 multijet ducato all I can find in the owners manual regarding oil is areference to selenia ws obviously this is fiat supplied oil is there an alterative to this and is it semi or synthetic the only info I got from the dealer is that I need 5-30c2 which means absolutely nothing to me

You need a Synthetic-based engine oil, grade SAE 5W- 40 with minimum ACEA B4 properties. That is FIAT 9.55535- N2 qualification
Most major oil companies produce oil to this spec e.g Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W40 engine oil
"MEETS OR EXCEEDS INDUSTRY SPECIFICATIONS
SAE 5W-40; ACEA C3; API SM/CF, VW 502 00/ 505 00/ 505 01, BMW Longlife-04, MB-Approval 229.31/ 229.51, Renault RN0700/0710, Meets Ford WSS -M2C917-A, Meets Fiat 9.55535-S2."

Yours is not exactly a performance engine so don't bother about the oil brand or type.
My van has the same engine and runs quite happy on supermarket oil. The viscosity is of some importance: I use 10W40 because it doesn't freeze here, in colder regions 5W30 seems more appropriate.

Engine oil is mineral product, even when the can says synthetic and the price has doubled or tripled. Every car manufacturer nowadays specifies expensive lubricants because of longer service intervals, yet they still want you to change the oil every year!

I used to think that until I was lucky enough to be invited to a tour of Castrols uk technical centre after seeing the technology and development that goes in to oil nowadays I never put anything other that what is recommended in any vehicle now

thank you all for those comments I was under the impression that it had to be synthetic because of the particulate filter that's what I was told with my previous vehicle

If you vehicle has a "d.p.f" then you must use the correct low saps synthetic oil no ifs buts or maybes I'm afraid , anything else and you will have problems maybe not immediately but you will down the line .
Keifer

Keifer's right mate,
Low saps or low ash oil, it's important as anything else will over time ruin your DPF,
It's so worth paying a few quid more to save potentially well over a grand if you needed a new DPF,
Mobil 1 esp
Shell helix diesel ultra extra
Castrol edge
Any thing the exceeds ACEA C2 (low ash)
Pre 2011 they recommended 5w40
Post 2011 (euro 5) 5W30

As with most things, pay more for quality, mines done 205000 miles on Selina genuine oil (2012 3.0 180) runs sweet and now DPF issues

Has a 2009 120 multijet got a DPF? I thought they came in with EuroV in 2011? I have quoted the oil spec from the handbook for your vehicle year in my post above.

I didn't say there was a D P F fitted I was told on another vehicle that it had to be synthetic if there was one fitted

Dpf or not always use the best quality correct spec oil in any vehicle :)

If I owned Castrol stock I would advise anyone to buy their oil, they make huge profits from clever marketing. But I don't, so my advice is not to waste money.
The average recreational Ducato does less than 10k miles per year so it is quite happy with any brand or type of multigrade lubricant if you replace it once a year. Several years ago a retired senior engineer from the Dutch Shell laboratory stated on TV that the yearly oil change was nonsense, all that matters is a new filter. They somehow managed to silence him immediately because his statement was potentially dangerous to the lubricants industry.

Btw, Castrol advises Magnatec for most EUR4 Ducatos!

CDK more or less hit the nail on the head. Clever marketing & certain petrol heads taken in by the spiel are two things that equal large profits for the oil companies. Personally I've tended to change my oil more frequently than most mainly due to stop start type of driving I do.

Obviously certain vehicles need the correct oil, but brands stating ludicrous statements such as magnetic properties are just fairy tales. At the end of the day there is no such thing as the best oil, it's a case what is suitable.
