Hi all,

Can anyone else hear what sounds like a (petrol) pinking engine sound coming from their Ducato 130 engine?

It's always there when driving (I know diesels shouldn't "pink" but it's the only similar sound I can describe it as) Sort of a tinkly sound.

2013 engine, 18 months old. 6000 miles. BP Ultimate diesel most of the time. Never gone over 3500 revs!

Never heard it on my previous good old 1996 2.5TD lump!

All thoughts welcome

cheers f'now

..... Hopefully worrying for nothing :):)

Hi all,

Well, over 100 views of my original query and no one has replied to say what the noise might be, if they have heard of the same, or to suggest there is nothing to worry about.

So I'll keep fingers crossed ...or pushed in my ears so I can't hear anything .. I guess!

:)

cheers
John

Hi John

We had a brand new L200 pickup a few years back that had a very slight noise that was there from new, engine was replaced under warrenty after 16000 miles and it turned out that one of the valves had been manufactured wrong and was tipping the piston as it came to the top!!!!
Has yours done it from new are you out of the warrenty period?

Regards Mike

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply
I only noticed the noise after about 4,000 miles .... now at 7000 miles and only 19 months old so still in warranty period.
Other Ducato 2.3 130 drivers (mine's a motorhome) I've spoken to say they haven't noticed any "tinkly" sound, although a motorhome driver with the same (but Peugeot based) engine says theirs does "tinkle" a bit.
Poorly manufactured valves tipping the piston sounds scary.....!
Did your L200 pickup go "bang" or did a friendly Main Dealer check and find the problem with yours (if there is such a thing as a friendly Main Dealer post-sale! ) :D
Cheers

The dealer had heard the noise when doing the PDI when i went back after a couple of miles he said to just drive it as hard as possible like you normally do, couple guys came over from mitzibusi and said much the same after it had not improved they decided to replace the whole engine so it could be taken back to factory and dismantled to find out what it was. We had gone to mitzis from toyotas for the 3yr or 100k miles warrenty that they offered.
Would suggest that you ask your dealer to investigate the problem while its still in warrenty as no one seems to have had similar problem.
Will be interesting what they find if anything!!
Cheers mike

Euro5 multijet has up to 8 injections per cycle so you can have ignitions at point in the stroke you'd never expect to hear it. Sometimes they are far from optimal to reduce emissions or aid regeneration of the dpf. I would say take a couple of similar vans for a test drive and see if they sound similar.

Hi,
I have exactly the same sound , usually just after increasing the throttle.
Mt Fiat dealer reckons it is vibration and not a worry.

Alan
