Help!! My 2009 2.3 ducato is rough on the tick over and when driving is hesitant then pulls away fast it's as if something is choking it then clears itself, when changing gear ie from 3rd to 4th it revs up 2 thousand to about 3thousand revs when the clutch is in. new parts include MAF, throttle control valve, throttle pedal, fuel filter and head, EGR valve, 2 new injectors and new timing belt but it is still the same there's no warning lights or any faults coming up on the fiat laptop, any help would be greatly welcome

Fuel pump pressure regulator?

I had an old 57plate 2.3 which specialist diagnosed injectors (was doing same as yours and often stalling on take off)
Bought 4 new injectors, they wouldn't do the work as they didn't want bolts to snap off as they were seized in, got another garage to do it, 3 weeks, head/cam covers off, cam belt, service, £4000 later, it's ready, hang on garage says, it's stalling when I set off in first he says!!!

Fuel pressure reg on high pressure pump, £120 later good as new!!!

It hasn't been chipped/black box installed? Could be faulty, or turbo possible,

Good luck, could be anything on fuel/air flow/turbo/egr

So many parts, such little knowledge. The only way to diagnose these things properly is by recording parameters and looking at them, a good drive around with autocom, delphi or whatever recording flight data and analyse the data afterwards.

Thanks for the replies and no it's not chipped new MAF sensor and new egr valve last week have made no difference and fuel pressure has been tested and found to be ok

You need to look at the live parameters, graph pedal %, requested pressure, actual pressure for a start. Pump regulator as mentioned would be likely culprit might just need the tip cleaned you'll probably see actual pressure deviating badly from requested. Could be an earth, power, loom, ecu issue either.

ecunotemu. thanks very much for the help you have given me. I think my best bet is to put the m/home into a diesel specialist and see what they can come up with
Kind regards

Hi rolopolo
Is there any way to test the fuel pressure regulator or is it just get 1 fitted and hope for the best
Regards cosworth101

I wouldn't know on if you can test it or not, just that a diesel specialist in Watford miss diagnosed with his "specialist" diagnosis equipment where an independent garage correctly diagnosed it as pressure reg, think it was about £120 plus fitting,
I would ring around a couple of garages and ask for prices on diagnosis, some have a set price, if lucky they will look at it for free expecting to get the work

Rolopolo thanks for the advice I'll get on the phone and try a few garages

You've put in a lot of new parts to replace ones that were probably OK.
The ECU monitors essential functions and reports any errors found. If there are none, replacing parts like the MAP sensor or throttle sensor is wasting money.

What the ECU cannot monitor because FIAT omitted feedback wiring, is the notorious throttle valve, located in an awful position only rain water can reach. The phenomenon you've described is exactly what the valve can do. It robs the engine from almost all combustion air, then snaps back when vacuum pulls at it.

Pry off the little black connector on top of it with long nosed pliers. Not easy, but it can be done. Then make a test drive to see if the engine performance improves. The engine can still be choked one more time, after that it should be over.

Thanks but I've replaced the throttle control valve. Went to a auto electric garage today but was told as there was no faults coming up it was a diesel problem and he could not help so I'm waiting for a diesel injection garage to phone me back
cosworth101?

Never made it to garage ducato broke down AA think it's a problem with the relays in the fuse box in engine bay got a piggy back to home so now will have to get relays tested by auto electrician?

After fitting a new fuse/relay box with all new fuses and relays I started ducato and still had the same probs stopped the engine then had bother starting again and when it did start it belched out white smoke and seems to be running on 3 cylinders tick over is fine but when revved it goes on 3 then seems to run ok now have fauld code P0355 crankshaft sensor I wish I could get to the bottom of this problem?

I'd be looking for water ingress / corrosion / damage in the loom, ecu conector, earths etc.

Hi all the things you mention have been checked and are fine I can start the engine after a long turn over and it will idle fine then if revved it seems to run on 3 cylinders then it clears and runs on four and will rev high and tick over fine again it is showing P0335 fault code so I'm putting a new crankshaft sensor on tomorrow thanks very much for the reply ?

Who's fuel do you put in?

I and others have had issues with supermarket fuel, on my old 120 57 plate, each time I put a tank in from sainsburys it threw up FI warning light and ran odd, I only use shell or bp now and bung a redex or diesel magic diesel injector cleaner in once a month,
Not had those issues since

My only issues still ongoing are with water ingress!
Another glow plug down, and seized, it's going in a week tomorrow for a few days for them to try and remove without it snapping off again,

Hi rolopolo
I only use BP cos I had a problem with Morrisons fuel causing my mondeo car to run weird so I never use supermarket fuel I only hope when the crankshaft sensor is fitted it will let my m/ home run the way it should cos I'm at my wits end??
