hi all.. I have a ducato 2.8 jtd motorhome its a 2002 model on25k.. it has run without a blip over the last 6 years and only recently started playing up..the last few times I have taken it out as I have travelled along out of the blue the engine dies on me, all the usual dash ignition lights come on.. I then put it in neutral,, quickly turn off/on the ignition and she runs up immediately only occasionally but this last time out she has done it twice on the motorway. as I pull a small car behind it is getting dangerous as I might get stranded out in a lane.. could anybody please offer an explanation for this be it electrical or mech. as I can then get some help from the appropriate source.. I had thought it was water in the fuel or something similar but I don't know.. thanks

Get someone to read the codes from the ecu or do it yourself for a start.

Thanks for that but How would it be poss for me to read the codes myself

thanks guys for u help.. tempting as it is to check the codes myself I really don't have the expertise so I have thrown myself to the mercy of the local garage .. got it booked in for Monday.. when I get results I will come back and post them

No expertise required if you buy a code reader like the U-480 (Ebay). It comes with a booklet containing a complete code to English text list. The device has a display and only 2 buttons; it can also reset codes that are stored in the ECU so you do not have to drive with the disturbing warning light.

Not quite the same symptoms but, does your M/H have a powered step that retracts when starting if left out? I recently had a issue that the engine would just die shortly after starting that I believe was related to the step because lubing the pivots and the switch with maintenance spray so it retracted fully, appears to have cured the problem.

My step is retractable but only works when there's an r in the month so I am of a habit of retracting it manually when we pull off.. But thanks for that I don't think that my prob but I will check if nowt found in codes

Hi update.. Took m/home to fiat main dealer to have the codes read and they said there was no plug to read as the early 02 vehicles were mechanical and pump etc was run off engine with no electronics.. Changed fuel and air filters and put some injector cleaner in ???

Got all original paperwork for vehicle inc. Sales paperwork and it is called a 2.8 JTD as is the badges..they looked everywhere under the dash and the chief tech came out looked at the dash and lights and came out with that statement so I don't know mate bit lost to be honest

Well they're either lying through their teeth or they know so little about your vehicle you'd be better off bringing it to a bicycle shop at least they'd tell you they hadn't an effin clue.

Thats what the jtd engine looks like, see the clips holding the cover at the front of the engine, under there is the rail, rail pressure sensor, injector pipes and injectors, each injector will have a electic connetor on it.

Heres whats under the cover.

The mechanical one will look something like this, there are a few variations but you'll see the big mechanical pump with the 4 pipe coming out of it at the front.

well mate it is a JTD exactly as the photo clips and all.. now the main dealer was lee and turner at bridgend .. a major player in swift motorhomes in south wales and I spoke to their foreman tek.. he must have bin sh.....g me.. the other tek was looking for a remote plug under the steering wheel to plug into with his little hand held.. so he should have bin plugging in under the clips ?? these people got workshops like buck house . how do they do it..thanks again for sharing u knowledge mate

Its as the first pic a jtd.. As ecu says the only reader pllug ins are on the rail.. I think the garage was looking for a remote plug in with some sort of memory.. Don't know..

Those are not reader plugs they are for controlling the injectors and measuring rail pressure, there are a lot of sensors and actuators in the jtd system. The reader connection on your era van is a 3 pin thing I think its somewhere around the fuel filter takes a bit of poking to find it.

Thank again I have it booked into a small local garage with a guy who deals a lot with vans so fingers x. As u see I am struggling with this tech. When it came to engines pre injection inc. electrics I could do it all but now
