I notice my my 2011 X250 XLB motorhome is registered as panel van,(which it is) light goods (without the private) tax at present is £220 is there any advantage registering it as a motorhome, i.e. ferries, toll bridges etc. Rieaa.

I don't know about road tax, but registering it as a motorhome should give you a big discount on ferries (commercial van ferry charges are huge) and also your insurance should go way down, too, compared to a van. It should have been re-registered as a motorhome by the conversion company. Looks like you'll have to go through that process with the DVLA. There is info on their website about that.

It will be taxed as an LGV and is the same price for van or motorhome although the disc will say motor caravan on a properly regestered one.

If you tell the insurance company its regestered as a van but converted they should not have a problem.

DVLA would sometimes still regester converted vans as LGV's because they did not look like motorhomes following complaints from police in ref to stelth campers so they look at the photos sent in for re-classification and made a judgement from that.

The MOT is done on the basis of what is presented for the MOT so if it's a converted van then it done as a class 4 regardless of what its regestered as.

I use the Severn bridge and only pay the Car rate, only once did the toll person ask what the vehicle was and when I said it was a Camper they were ok and accepted the Car rate.

Motorhomes are either Private Light Goods (PLG) less than 3500kg or Private Heavy Goods (PHG) over 3500kg. PHG LED is the cheaper duty.
There are pro's and con's for both classes.

Here are some.
Speed limits.
Drivers age when car test was taken.
License renewal at 70 years of age.
Payload.

Probably more.

Do they weigh PVC's M/Homes on Ferry's, 'cause that's the only way to tell my M/home was built with the optional uprated chassis which increases the payload but when visually compared with the std model looks identical.

Hopes this makes sense.

Thanks for all your answers I'll check with the DVLA as I said there is no 'Private' on my reg. Just LG.

Looks like DVLA is right my 2011 Euro 4 160 X250 ht xlwb is LG. Rieaa.
