I have a 2006 Fiat Ducato with a 2.8JTD motor in a motorhome with 60000km. In the last year I have replaced the alternator and belt after the voltage regulator died and at Christmas I travelled a short 150km to break an alternator belt which wrapped around the crank pulley and pulled into the timing case breaking the timing belt. The engine was only idling at the time the belt broke but the damage to the cylinder head extensive. I have since rebuilt the engine thanks to you advice from this forum but am left wondering wether the whole alternator setup is robust enough to do the job. Any opinions.?

A common defect with modern altenators is the freewheel coupling wich seizes after about 50000miles........and then the belt makes noises and can jump of the driving wheels.....with results as you discribe!

But i dont know is your altenator has such a freewheel coupling.....
Do inquire about this!!
Another new thing wich does not make cars more reliabel!!!!!

Sucses from an older carmechanic from Holland!
