Hello, looking for a few ideas for a non starting problem.

Van has stood for about 6 weeks and was hardly used for the 6 weeks prior to that.

Got in, turned on and after glow plug lamp went out turned the key and a faint noise but nothing. The starter didn't engage at all.

Thinking maybe a flat battery (although it didn't even attempt to throw the starter dog with the ring gear) or even a very very flat battery.

Have to say have owned this van for nearly 5 years and it hasn't given a moments trouble, not a single thing, although until recently the previous use was on a daily or weekly basis.

Check battery voltage which was low at 12.3v so decided to jump with another battery but the same result.

Charged both vehicle and jump battery and tapped the starter with a heavy piece of wood, apart from two light clunks nothing.

The van is outside and it's peeing down so will leave physically getting under the van until tomorrow, but have started to wonder if there are relays or other electrical control, devices which can give this effect?

Thanks for any help

I had a similar problem on our 2006 motorhome which had a 2.8JTD in it, I removed the battery earth cables and cleaned the terminals and where the cable met the engine, I then removed all the battery positive cables and cleaned them all up etc., and it started first and was OK after that

Thanks for that suggestion I'll do a continuity test tomorrow.

Have to say though that that all warning lamps come on, the glow plug lamp goes through the correct sequence and I can hear the fuel pump running, so power is there although maybe not under load?

how long you have the car and have you ever had something done with the starter, if not well, it might have knocked bushings making them big backlash in the starter and stanols slant, or just ran out of the brush :) reasons may be many, check yet if the power cord is not open solenoid were firends and fastened on the connector
