I have got a Fiat Ducato Year 2001 2.8D and it was sitting for 3 years. When I parked it, the engine was fine.

When I tried to start it yesterday, the battery was turning the engine, but it wouldn't fire. After a long day I managed to fire the engine, but the acceleration is not working at all.

I tried turning manually the accelerator (where the fuel pedal is connected), but it doesn't rise any engine rpms.

I will mentioned that I noticed that the black air filter pipe is torn somewhere, but I don't know if that affects the acceleration.

When I asked some other people said that maybe its the crankshaft sensor that needs to be replaced, or the EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve is stuck.

Anyone had this problem before and knows what is the solution to this problem?

You need to plug her in and find out what's happening.
Where are you guys,I could come over if it's not to far.

Hi. What do you mean plug her in? To plug the diagnostic? I examined the whole car, but I couldn't find the plug for the ECU. Do you know where exaclty is the plug for the ECU diagnostic?
I don't think you could come, because I live in Nicosia, Cyprus. Thanks anw

A 2001 vehicle must have an OBD connection in the cab.
All vehicles after 2000 were obd compliant.
I've no idea where the connection port is on your van sorry.

yes its a mechanical pump / accelerator. I couldn't find the plug as far neither within the cab, or the engine area.

Not true.

The european requirement was January 1, 2004 for existing model diesel engined cars, January 1, 2007 for light commercial diesels over 2.5 ton.

The 02-06 model may have had a diagnostic port in the cab but its not fully compliant.

Pre facelift ecu models had a three pin connector under the bonnet. for KL lines.

First thing if its been idle that long is is it pumping oil? Oil light coming on and going off as expected? Oil pump may have lost prime and you've been trying to start a dry engine bore, beside priming the oil pump, secondly before starting a diesel thats idle that long I'd clean out the tank, put in fresh diesel and a good dose of injector cleanaer, flush the fuel lines with fresh diesel and put in a new fuel filter.
You can get microbial growth and waxes can settle out of it during the winter, it can be like soup. Also change the return hoses it only costs a few cent they're probably porous by now which means the diesel will drain back to tank when standing.
Once you're sure you have oil circulation, clean free flowing diesel. You can start looking for more complicated things like the pump could be gunked up internally.

Hi Moodtrater,
Thanks for the reply, and as I can see all your sayings seem to be right and reasonable.
I would like to define me with some details in some of your sayings:

1. Oil light coming on and going off as expected?. Yes the oil indicator lamp goes on when you turn the key, just before starting the engine, and then goes off when the engine runs.

2. Oil pump may have lost prime, beside priming the oil pump.. By saying prime or priming, you mean performance? How do I check that?

3. injector cleanaer . Where do I put in the injector cleaner? Is it within the fuel tank, or directly to the injector pipes?

4. How am I going to clean the fuel tank? Is it just to empty the old oil and put fresh diesel? Or Do I need to take off the tank from the car, and give it a complete clean out? (This would be difficult cause I don't have the car in a garage shop).

5. pump could be gunked up internally . Gunked, you mean stuck or something?

I will try to do all that steps before proceeding to any more complicated stuff as you said.

All comments appreciated Thanks

No need to take out the tank, under the passengers feet theres an access panel remove that, then the inner panel, then theres a circle of bolts 6mm or 8mm you remove then you can take the whole sender unit out of the tank, before takig it out give everything around it a good clean so you don't have dirt falling into the tank. Inspect the tank for sludge/wax/rust take a same of the diesel from the bottom of the tank in a jar it may be fine. If you have sluge/wax etc, you can siphon 99% of it out and clean out the last bit with kitchen towels.

Make sure the uptake on the sender unit is clean before puttin it back in the tank. Torque down the nuts by hand with a driver or 1.4 inch ratchet and your fingertips. Too easy to snap them with anything else.

If diesel in the tank looks clean then you may just want to change the filter, prefill the filter with fresh diesel so you're not cranking all day to gt the diesel to the pump.

re: priming the oil pump, gear pumps need oil in them to be able to pump if they drain down they can't pump anything, if the oil light is coming on and going off its probably fine, take off the filler cap and make sure you have oil making it up to the cam.

Is your model idtd not d by any chance ? Whats you vin number so I can check.

The model is the D not the IDTD as far as I know. there is a label on the side of the car 2.8D
