Hi,
When replacing the cambelt on my 2.8 JTD can I rely on just the timing marks on the cam & crank pulley's?
The auto data book I have had a look at suggests that there is (a choice of 2) locking tool to be inserted into the bell housing to hold the flywheel/crank in position.
Is the tool really necessary?
If so, what are the differences in the tools & the location in the bellhousing. Is it down to engine code or gearbox (casing) type.
I have had a look at my gearbox casing/bellhousing but there is nothing that stands out as obvious
Any pictures to shed any light on this gratefully received.
Thanks

Hi
Check out my guide to replacing the Timing Belt on a 2.8JTD back in 2009, a copy is also in the guides section as well -
https://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/218539-2-8-jtd-timing-belt-replacement.html
Although I was told that there was a hole in the bellhousing somewhere to lock the crankshaft with a screwdriver or similar, I could not find it!
So as I state in the guide I manufactured a locking plate for the ring gear which required the removal of the starter motor.
There is a link in that thread to some pictures so you can see the one I made to lock the crank, unfortunately there is very limited room to take clear pictures of the step by step process but hopefully the detailed description helps in the Belt replacement procedure. As for the timing mark locations - see point 4 in my guide.
Hope that helps.
Cheers (y)

I did see the guide, very helpfull thanks.
I dont have the time to fabricate my own locking plate, as we are looking to use the van friday & I am doing the belt change after work during evenings.
Strange that the locking holes cannot be found, the kits usually contain 3 locking pins & the collar to hold the tensioner in the off postion.
Below is a picture of the autodata book that I managed to get a page copy of.
I wonder if any Fiat techs know where the hole is hidden, lol.
