Hi, i hope you can help me - I have a 2004 Fiat Ducato - over the last few months we've had problems with a clicking sound [same noise the indicator makes when indicating] - happening randomly from somewhere behind the hazard switch. - this has since stopped [someone helpful on this forum mentioned it might be a faulty earth strap] , however when starting the van up today the hazards were flashing and the button to switch them on/off doesnt work. Also the main and dipped beams have stopped working - I've changed the fuse for the hazard and the problem persists - also now when removing the keys from the ignition - the hazards still flash using up the battery power - I can remove the fuse to stop this happening, but obviously the van is undriveable without it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Ok - while writing the above post I had the van running on my drive [with the hazards flashing], just to top up the battey. I noticed the hazards stopped flashing and now the indicators work and the hazards switch on/off ok!!! - So I guess the problem is the same as mentioned before in another post - possible faulty earth strap [i have removed this and re-attached] and I've temporarily earthed the battery using a jump lead. The intermittent clicking coming from behind the hazard switch still remains - could this be a faulty hazard unit? - any ideas on how to test this or get a replacment?
Thanks.

I just took a good look at the circuit diagrams for the lighting and hazards/flashers. All the lights and flashers go through the switch control unit, which is directly behind the hazard switch, foglight switch, etc. in the middle of the dashboard. It looks like a fairly complicated unit and changing it would be the cure if that's the problem. Being an electronic unit, it can be upset by a bad power supply to it, so that's where you should look first. Pull off the positive battery connector and find all the maxi fuses under the black cover next to the battery connector. All the contacts of those fuses should be nice and shiny and tight in their holders. The other half of the circuit is the battery earth to chassis, which is where the negative battery lead is bolted to the body. The metal of the earth connector and the metal of the body underneath that must be bright and shiny, so there's very good contact. The earth strap from engine to chassis is a known problem, but this gives symptoms of weak starter motor and poor charging from the alternator. Well worth making sure it's in one piece and the contact surfaces are shiny, though.

Its worth cleaning the contact and reseating the connectors on the control unit behind the hazard switch. This solved my clicking. I had problems with the unit when the left taillight and rear left earth behind the tail light was corroded.

Thanks for the help guys, I reseated the main connector behind the hazard switch + removed and reseated all of the fuses - still no joy - ended up swapping the relays on the left hand side fuse box under the passenger glove compartment and it worked! - swapped the relays back and it still worked so must have been a dodgy connection from one of the relays [removed and bent the pins slightly to get a better connection] . The van has not been moved yet, but all of the electrics seem to be working as they should. Hopefully it will be ok once its bouncing along the roads in the Lake District tonight!

Cheers.
