It is attached to the air filter box.
Discovered that it and the pipes were full of gunk / sludge....

Any help would be appreciated on what this is.

Is it a crankcase ventilation system, a crude form of emission control? If so it is an oil trap which should be cleaned out regularly. If it were not there then the air filter would get gunged up with the oil.
