1.9 td Camper van 1999. Engine temperarure gauge ok, then red engine overheat light comes on. Radiator top hose hot, bottom hose cold, radiator fans do not come on. Changed thermostat and then flushed radiator which seemed to cure he problem, i.e. the radiator bottom hose was warm and the fans came on if left on tick over. Took the van a run and all seemed ok, took it out the next day, bottom hose cold and the engine red light flashed on.

The van can be run of driven gently and the heater is full on with the fan on full. The problem came on after a stop at a motorway services, prior to the stop there had been no overheat light showing, it came on literally a couple of miles after the stop. There is no loss of water.

Any help appreciated, begining to get somewhat depressed by this!

Impeller slipping on the shaft maybe some of the spurious ones have plastic impeller.

Not sure as when the engine first runs with the thermostat shut water can be seen pumping up the small pipe from the engine to the header tank. Also I could find no coolant bleeding points? After back flushing the lower radiator hose (the one with the restrictor in by the oil filter take off) the rad worked fine with a steady temperature gradient and the coolant fan came on when I left it ticking over for a fairly long time. When I next used it from cold the bottom hose from the rad again remained cold and the engine overheat light flashed on. At present we are trying to tour Ireland and really need to bottom this out for the trip back to the UK

I don't have a 1.9 but as a general principle the water pump draws water from the radiator through the bottom hose and blows it out through the top hose.

If the hose is original it could have softened with age and is collapsing under suction somewhere along its length.

Agree with Crossingkeeper, Had this on one of my vehicles it looked O.K when the engine was cold but as it warmed up the bottom hose would collapse.

Thanks for your replies. I have removed the centre from the thermostat and flushed everything through again. Now running very cold with a temperature gradient down the radiator. This should get me back to the UK and then it is a new bottom hose and radiator out for a check plus a new genuine Fiat thermostat. We will see what that achieves.

Thanks again

Mine had the usual overheating problems.
Eventually I checked the radiator, and found the fins had rotted off the cores.
I still occasionally get the light on, there is a sensor in the header tank that lights it up on mine if the coolant is slightly low.

Thanks, this red light is definetly an over temperature light, there is also a temperature gauge. It looks as though one is for engine temperature and the other is the temperature at the radiator? Anyway when we get back I will carry a full check of the radiator and hoses and let you know what I find.

Thanks again
