Hi All,

Re: 2005 Ducato 2.8JTD AUTOMATIC

Not owned long and was really enjoying this great piece of kit, until: emergency stop. I noticed a warning light (bonnet in up position) and felt like it was on half power. I switched the ignition off and on again and the warning light went off and the power returned. A week later I was reversing out of my drive and just about had enough power to crawl. I have since changed the auto gearbox fluid with 2 litres, and having read other threads I am going to add .7 of a litre next week. The old gearbox fluid was not the same colour as the new and the new was an improvement on the problem.

As things stand, I can regain power by switching ignition off/on. Any idea's would be great, thanks, Mark

I think the 'bonnet up position' is actually the automatic gearbox temperature/gearbox problem warning light. Have a look in the handbook. It tells you what it means etc. The auto gearbox fluid should be bright red/orange colour I think and if it's dirty then it usually means it's been in too long or has been overheated at some time. The fill level is quite critical if it's too low the auto box will not function properly.

Hi Toyogran, thanks for the reply.

Not much of an excuse with access to the WWW, but handbook is non-English.

Yep, red went in and grey sludge (2l) came out. I have a receipt for changed ATF 6 months ago!

I almost didn't post until I had added the .7l and have my fingers crossed that all will be resolved then, Mark

You can download an English version from this site; it's in downloads.
If the transmission fluid was very dirty then you may need to change it a couple of times to clear out the old fluid that remains in the gearbox pump when the gearbox is drained. Not too sure about Ducatos but on other automatic boxes you need to select all the gears when stationary to circulate the fluid. This helps to move the old fluid around before you drain it.
The gearbox level is normally measured when the fluid is warm but check what it says in the handbook. (it also mentions something about the cooling fans which should come on when the transmission fluid gets too hot).
Hope you get it sorted!

....added the extra .7L yesterday and everything is running beautifully!

Many thanks Toyogran
