Technical replacement Ducato 1.9 td engine

Hi, anyone out there who can help me please, i do need a lot of help.
We have a Riviera motorhome 1996 withthe 1.9 td engine. It was/is garaged over the winter, however, at the weekend it was started up with the intention of taking it to the garage to have an MOT.
Immediately the RED oil light came on, so switched off, called the garage who towed it to their workshop swaped the pressure switch without success.
My question is, should the pump have failed and other damage caused making it not cost effective to repair, so a recon. engine is the better option, can i have the garage fit a "younger" larger engine to get the benefit of a " quieter, less stress on the unit etc for better mpg???
Would appreciate any advice thanks.

If the engine was shut down soon after start up then there should be no significant damage, however if serious damage was done to the crankshaft pistons etc, it would most probably be cheaper to transplant a good secondhand engine than to have a garage rebuild the bottom end.

Newer engines such as the 2.0 HDI (more use to peugeots of this age, I believe the engines are the same), would give better fuel economy, be quieter and have a little extra power, providing that no large modification is needed for the engine to fit properly. Problems in fitting could include, gearbox clutch, and drive shaft issues, also fuel pipes could be a problem although may be easier to get round than the running gear, in short it would be easier and cheaper to fit the same engine.

A few things to think about first, was the engine serviced before running, although it was just stored over winter, thick oil could be the cause. Also could it just be a faulty oil pump. I would have thought the garage had covered these issues, but just to be on the safe side, (assumption is the mother of all **** ups)

Hi, I too am the owner of a Riviera with the same engine, unfortunately these things are prone to overheating . Mine overheated in Belgium and I have had no luck curing it. There are other engines that will fit, a Peugeot J5 and a Citreon Boxer will fit and are far more economical with much more power. These engines are very underpowered for the vehicle but I did manage to get mine up to 68mph once going down a slight hill. Having said that at some point I am going to rebuild mine so if you do decide to get rid of it can you let me know as I would love a spare to strip down for parts. Anonther idea would be to use a Talbot 2.5 which my mate has in the same body shell, i'm also thinking of replacing mine with one of these so I can keep up with the bugger.

Maybe oil pump has just drained down while idle might need to be primed.

If you look at the Ducato wiki page, a 2.5 non turbo has about the same power and torque as a 1.9 turbo, you need a 2.5 turbo for a bit extra ummmph.

Upgrading the engine is a nightmare job! You would probably also have to change the gear box and the electrics. If you turned it off the moment you saw the oil light there should be any engine damage. In my experience the oil pump can be replaced for much less than replacing the engine

I had a Swift Royale 590 2.5d non turbo and it really struggled on hills. Even on the flat it would only do 50/60mph. I couldnt even keep up with lorries! Now I have a 1.9td Autoquest and it has far more power. 70mph but she likes to cruze at about 60/65mph. Keeps up with the traffic and can even overtake lorries if I want.
