Currently looking at used motorhomes a lot of which seem to be based on the FIAT Ducato - 2-4 years old.

In terms of common issues I should be looking out for I would be grateful for some guidance.

I'm thinking engine/gear box/drive train rather than the structure of a motorhome itself which I'm confident I can look out for.

Any help appreciated.

Water ingress to the engine bay seems quite common also defective EGR valves.

Just for the record anyone!! 244 ducato 2000- 2006 do not have DMF (dual mass flywheels) the newer models 250 ducato 2007- present do have DMF

How the water ingress takes place is well understood especially among motor home owners. I have modified two X250's to prevent water ingress with no specific skill or special materials required and for less than £20 each. Fiat appear not to able to do it in the 6 years since the model was introduced.

We sir I bow to your greater experience, please advise how this was achieved as I have a 244 motorhome which is leaking??

I have only modified X250 variants. There has been no general complaint regarding X244 variants but perhaps daz1690 can help as he asked what variant you have.

When my 244 was leaking it was simply that the bonnet hinges were stiff and closing in a cocked up position, lubricant and working the hinges to wash the corrosion out of the joint was all that was required. A good way to check rubber seals is to put a sheet of paper in the gap and close the boot/bonnet. The resistance as you pull out the paper will tell you if its making proper contact. If its making good contact then open the bonnet and use the garden hose to check if your seal is torn or out of place.

Flat engine battery is a common fault due to the drain of the radio and alarm system. They can flatten the battery in 2 weeks. The best way around it is to fit a solar panel and a bit of kit to also transfer charge to the engine battery. There are expensive kits but plenty at around £20 - £25 if you do a google.
