Hi, I have the above vehicle which I'm coming to the conclusion that it was built on MARS as it seems no one can fix/ tell me what the problem is, that is Non Start! there's plenty of battery, that is till I flatten it by constantly turning the engine over without it firing into life!... the 'Padlock' lights up on the dash but goes out as the engine turns over (without starting)... is this an immobiliser issue??.....is there a known non start fault that is associated to this model

Hi,
bad chip in the key is favourite,
followed by Aerial ring in lock, and ECU not recognising key through foor connections,
what age / mileage van?,
had it long ?, any other issues..??,
Charlie

Year 2008, 8651 miles, private sale, had the vehicle 4mths in this time had a Cat1 alarm fitted but the installer is adamant this problem would be nothing to do with the alarm ...'padlock' symbol on dash goes out when engine is turning over..which I understand is correct if immobiliser is working correctly?

My X250 3L handbook says:
Turning the key to MAR the warning light
shall flash only once and then go off.

The warning light turned on glowing
steadily with key at MAR, indicates:
❒ possible failure (see” Fiat Code system”
in section “Dashboard and controls”);
❒ possible attempt to break-in with
alarm on; in this case the warning light
will turn off after about 10 seconds.

If with the engine running the warning light
flashes, this means that the vehicle is
not protected by the engine inhibitor device
(see “Fiat Code system” in section
“Dashboard and controls”).

Extract from Dashboard and controls:
OPERATION
Each time the vehicle is started turning the
ignition key to MAR, the Fiat CODE system
control unit sends a recognition code
to the engine control unit to deactivate
the inhibitor.
The code is sent only if the Fiat CODE
system control unit has recognised the
code transmitted from the key.
Each time the ignition key is turned to
STOP, the Fiat CODE system deactivates
the functions of the engine electronic control
unit.
If the code has not been recognised correctly,
the warning light Yturns on accompanied
by the related message on the
display (see section “Warning lights and
messages”).
In this case, the key should be moved to
the STOP position and then back to
MAR; if the lock continues, possibly try
again with the other key provided with the
vehicle. If it is still not possible to start the
vehicle, contact Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT Every key has its own code,
which must be memorised by the system
control unit. To memorise new keys, up
to a maximum of eight, apply to Fiat Dealership

Also, can you elaborate what are you talking about "Aerial ring in lock"

The "aerial" is built into the lock surround. The key transmits and the aerial receives it and passes it on to the immobiliser /ECU if the code is correct.

Can you confirm that when you turn the ignition ON, without starting the engine, that the warning padlock sign is permanently illuminated?

yes the 'Padlock' is on permanently illuminated with ignition key on...When the starter is engaged and engine turns over Padlock goes out ... I'm told this is correct!???

Is the PCM powering up? Can you read any errors using a scan tool, does scan tool access all modules?

Atlas no, I have no electronic diagnostic equipment.....but the vehicle is in a garage who used to be 'Lucas' and there struggling to identify what the problem is:bang:

No it is not. The padlock sign should go out shortly after the ignition as been turned on. The handbook says:

It is a waste of time trying to start with the padlock sign on as it indicates that the immobiliser is set thus cutting off the fuel system.

that was also my impression, ( lock sign = it's locked..!!)

Have you tried BOTH keys ?

how long since the alarm was fitted..??,
will they show you how to disable it for the meantime..??

A friend had an alarm AND a towbar fitted within 2 months of purchase..months later it had similar issues.. = needed an autoelectrician to find a poor additional earth on fusebox - neither fitter said it was their fault.. at least it was fixed,

Many thanks to everyone who took an interest and posted your advice's, the problem was fixed a couple of hours ago by a very competent electrician and was found to be water corrosion in a lead that goes from the control solenoid up the the ECU:confused:...at least that's what I've been told! what I will do is find out exactly where this lead is and find out why water is getting to it..again many thanks:D

sorry 'Soleniod' was their jargon, what's a PCM ?...anyway all's well and a load off my mind

Thats good and well but if we knew exactly what was wrong it would be of benefit to other forum users.

PCM powertrain control module otherwise known as ECU (engine control unit)
Yes I agree but how many Forum users out there that understand the electronics of a modern diesel, after all if I knew how to diaganose the problem and had sufficent equipment to undertake that task and perhaps if I had your knowledge we wouldn't be discussing it here!...Suffice to say, I gave the name of the company and contact number that I used to sort the problem and their skill's saved me a potential whole lot of money.
