Hi all, I was having an off day and drove straight past the petrol station this morning and ran out of fuel. I didnt try to restart it when it conked out until I had put some fuel back in it, but it wouldn't restart. The recovery guy came out and after allot of messing around it still would not start. He cracked off the nuts of each injector and got fuel through but when it gets to the pump nothing happens.

Is it fair to say that the pump is U S or are there any little things on the pump, like a bleed valve or reset that the guy could of missed?

recovery folk tend not to be real mechanics

it wouldnt be in his interests to get you running and not haul you away.

by saying he cracked off injectors on a tdi i take it it has got a non common rail setup

and has a rotary pump and conventional injectors

could be you didnt run out but ran low and sucked up the crap at the bottom of the tank in a 10+ year old van

if he cracked of nuts to injectors and got fuel it should start ( if its enough to indicate the airlock or restriction is not a problem)
but what do you mean at the pump nothing happened - something has to happen as this is before the injectors in a diesel circuit and must be pushing fuel to the injectors that you say are giving fuel

is there any smoke at exhaust on cranking indicating fuel injection to cylinders?
being a direct injection the cold start shouldnt be a problem on starting.
sounds as if the guy was blagging it
was t belt checked ( if its not chain or gear setup) for failure but this wouldnt allow pump to turn and feed injectors
most modern cars/vans self bleed but im finding fiat a bit behind the times so maybey expect a primer before injection pumpand a bleed screw on the pump.

feed to fuel shut off solenoid ok if accesible and not shielded as part of immobiliser ?

if this is the peugot d turbo engine as fitted to early ducatos / relays / boxers

then yes it will have a hand grenade type primer before the pump and bleed screw on either a bosch or lucas injection pump

lucas pumps are sheeeeiite and feel rough acceleration and arnt as reliable

bosch pumps are uber reliable / no comparison in quality just water and dirty fuel that can wreck them over time.bosch pumps also reliable on biodiesel .

if you can prime fuel to pump bleed screw and it doesnt inject out of injector pipes after cranking for a while then could be fair to say pump knackered
but depending on the state of your fuel hosing and filter there could be a blockage or drawing in air losing the vacum for lifting diesel from the tank
