Hi guys -

This may be an idiot question, but we live here in Spain and we've just bought a 2001 Ducato 2.8 JTD based LHD motorhome.
It's apparently the "pre-facelift" Ducato model. Black bumper, no CAT.

It's got a noticeable "flat spot" in the power at about 2,500 rpm.
I'm wondering: does it have an ECU, and is it thus possible to get it "chipped" for smoother power curve/a bit more oooomph?

Has anyone chipped a similar year/model of Ducato?

All comments appreciated.......thanks, Bruce.

Hi Bruce,
I was wondering if you found a way to connect your Ducato 2001 with a diagnostic. I have the 2001 2.8D, but I couldn't spot the ECU-OBD plug (I don't know even if there is one)

This is how you do it.............

Connecting Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD 2001 to Diagnostic machine.

Most garages need to use an adaptor lead to get your Ducato diagnostic plug fitted to their diagnostic computer kit.

Some garages/breakdown people don't have the right adaptor, or don't know how to hook it up, which is why I always carry one in the MH, together with the written instructions below on how to use it.

This is the adaptor lead that you need:*

The diagnostic plug socket on our 2001 2.8 JTD Ducato (as you stand looking into the bonnet, ie looking rearwards) is on the right side of the engine bay, near the air filter (the big black cylindrical thing at the back right of the engine bay).

It is NOT a three pin plug with THREE wires coming from it (if you have one there...that is for the ABS system if fitted), but it is the three pin plug nearby with only TWO wires coming from it.
Its centre wire is black, its left hand wire is white & red, and nothing comes from the right hand pin.**

Connection of adaptor lead:-

Tape off the end of the Black connector of the multi-purpose adaptor cable, so it can't touch anything metal under the bonnet.

Connect the Red wire of the multi-purpose adaptor to positive (red) terminal of vehicle battery.

Connect the Green lead of multi-purpose adaptor to the left hand pin of the ECU connector (the White and Red wire).

Connect nothing to the ECU connector centre Black wire.

DO NOT at this point connect the black earth wire of the multi purpose adaptor to the negative terminal on the battery, nor let it touch anything metal in the vehicle.

Now try the system. If it works, then DO NOT connect that black earth wire to anything.

ONLY if the diagnostics computer doesn't work , then also undo the tape on end of the Black wire of the multi-purpose lead, and connect it to the negative (black) terminal of vehicle battery, and try the diagnostics system again.

Hi BGD,
Thanks for the information provided. I 've found two 3-pin plugs which have both 2 wires as you told me. They are placed at the right hand side of the engine somewhere between engine and air filter. I will upload the pictures I took to see the actual plugs. I am wondering why there are two plugs instead of one.

Which one is the right one to connect to obd diagnostic?
Thanks

Seperate plug for abs and possibly code unit. multimeter the ecu pins will tell you which i the correct one.

I think I followed that apart from the bit in bold italics.

My three pin to ODB II adapter (similar to the one from eBay) has a red lead to connect to power and then a three pin plug which seems to be made to fit the socket only one way. There are no green or black wires.

I do also have an eBay one with the red and black wires.Again there is just a black moulded three pin plug.

The red power wire isn't long enough to reach anywhere near the battery. Is there a live terminal near the ECU or do I need an additional length of wire?

Finding the correct socket with a multi-meter. I assume that with the engine running only one of the sockets will have current between the connectors? (I am wondering in this case how you use the other plug for diagnostics).

Just about to start investigating the dreaded intermittent power loss with red injector light (I think it is dropping into limp mode).

It's an old thread but for others looking to read the old 3 pin diagnostics this might be useful
