I have a 3l X250 on a 58 plate with an engine that hesitates.

The problem usually occurs at 2200-2400 revs at light throttle. You can be in any gear.

It's feels as though you have lifted your right foot momentarily - when in fact your foot hasn't moved.

Fiat have looked - there are no codes present so they are at a loss.

For peace of mind they changed the throttle body and the wiring - but no joy. I have changed the mass air flow meter - it improved slightly, ie slightly less jerky, but the problem is still there.

Frustratingly though, the problem first occuedr after taking the van in to have a warning light resolved. The van drove very well until that point. The error code suggested it was the throttle body which was changed. The light went out and has stayed out every since. However, since that date I now have this hesitation which they cannot resolve.

I have found this really frustarting and annoying sometimes.

Has anyone found a cure?

Yours in hope, Tony

Hi,

I know nothing about X250's and little about diesels so this is just a guess based on what you have posted:

If the throttle body wasn't fitted properly (i.e. if the original gaskets were reused) would an small air leak into the intake manifold give these symptoms? (this theory being based on changing carburettors many years ago!)

Re: Engine Hesitation on 58 plated x250 - poss fuel filter problem?

Further to my first posting (still have the same problem!) I have seen on another forum a few other people with the same issues as me.

There is a suggestion that there is a problem with the fuel filter and a change of filter would resolve the problem.

It seems strange that so many posts regarding changing filters on low mileage uunits and I wonder why poeple are changing them so early.

Is a change of fuel filter going to solve my problem?

Thanks, Tony

Fuel filter is generally the first thing to change when a diesel engine isn't playing ball.
I know of a software update for the injection ecu that cures hesitation. Wether your fiat dealer checked for the update or not is another question.
As previously suggested.. the egr valves on this engine is very temperamental. But usually when the egr is playing up, it would flag an error.

I have a 2010 3.0l Motorhome and I suffer the same problem of a slight hesitation at around 2000 to 2300 rpm.

Mine is only apparent on light acceleration in 5th and 6th gears.

Again local Fiat agent didn't find anything on the diagnostics and the fuel filter had only recently been changed.

Mileage to date is 15,000.

Any ideas on possible causes?

Richard

Take it to a garage with a knowledgeable tech who can read live data, reading codes is easy and often wrong.

I would first be looking closely at EGR (circuit), airflow (support) readings and injectors.
