Hi guys......newbie needs some Fiat guidance if I can please.

My Fiat Ducato started running on after killing the ignition a few days ago, and today will not start; thinking that the problem was linked I started digging! I found out that fuel pump or fuel pump relay problems are common on the Ducato - I took the air filter pipe off and sprayed ez start straight into the inlet - she started to turn over roughly but died and had no response to the throttle being pressed - confirming that it is either a fuel pump or relay issue.

If I change the complete fuel pump assembly rather than the rotating core (inc sender unit if needs be); will this remove both the possibly faulty items, or is the relay located elsewhere???

Also, a mechanic at a local garage seemed to recall the diesel tank needs removing to change the lift pump - can anyone confirm his suspicions?

Thanks for any help you guys can give

Not starting is not unusual at all there are a myriad of reasons however the interesting bit is since you say it ran on with ignition off I would first check your ignition switch as the jtd engine is totally electronically controlled - it can't run on itself like the old mechanical diesel would when the stop solenoid was broken/stuck.

The orange wire from the ignition supplies the ecu on pin 58 via fuse 16 (7.5A) with the ignition off there should have been no power on to the ecu therefore no injection.

Even if we ignore the running on issue then its easy to check the lift pump. Your mechanic is wrong theres a cover by the passengers feet to get access to the pump sender unit. 4 screws, then another 4 then a ring of 7 or 8 mm nuts holding in the pump/ sender unit. No need to remove it just yet.

Firstly there is an inertia switch behind and above the battery that cuts power to the fuel pump this can sometimes trip out. This cuts the earth to the lift pump. To check there should be contiuity between the black and white wire to the lift pump and earth.

After the ignition it turned to the second position the lift pump is operated for about 20 seconds to prime the circuit if the vehicle hasn't started it then cuts out you should be able to hear it running after you turn the key. If you can't hear it running then check for 12v on the connector -maroon wire (don't forget it cuts out after 20secs or so). If you have 12v here and the pump isn't running then the pump is probably at fault if no 12v here check relay t10 and fuse f21 (15a). The relay coil is triggered by pin 24 of the ecu and powered via fuse f17

I wouldn't let anyone touch the van or contemplate replacing parts without reading the fault codes. If there was a problem with the pump you'd have a code.

Now I'm curious if you fixed the problem. I have one that won't start after about 5k km, but if I replace the diesel filter it runs again

Hey Woldo, I did fix the ORIGINAL problem yes, however I have a new non-starting issue now, I am going to tackle tomorrow and start a new thread now to see if I can draw some ideas as a starting point.

The original fix was relay T10 in the engine bay.

I have exactly the same problem engine running on for a couple of seconds no codes recorded manigmant light comes on and engine stops reset and starts instantly could run the hole day or a minute or so

Try putting a full bottle of injector cleaner in with low fuel level that's what I did and sorted mine also take a look at the electric lift pump there's a filter on the bottom gets blocked
