Hi and sorry for making my first post a plea for help. I have just bought a 1991 Ducato Burstner 680 motorhome. It appears to be in reasonable condition for its age, but has an intermittent problem with the headlights.

The dash lights and side lights work okay, as do the parking lights, but occasionally the dipped and main beam stop working.

The strange thing is that the interior lights and glove box light had never worked until today when I opened the glove box to check the fuses and relays (the ignition switch was in the accessory position and headlight stalk switched on), the glovebox light came on weakly, the headlight relay clicked and the headlights came on and could be switched between dipped and main beam. Pulling on the headlight stalk to flash the headlights also works with the glovebox lid open, but it makes the glovebox light get brighter too!

If I close the glovebox lid the headlights go off, if I turn the key to position 0 or 2 the lights go off.

A first I suspected the light relay, but have swapped them around to no avail. I am wondering if this is a problem with the ignition switch, or a bad earth.

If anyone has had a similar problem, it would be great to hear how you resolved it.

The headlight problem turned out to be corroded / burnt out contacts beneath the headlight relay and a loose wire under the steering column. The headlamps are all sorted and behaving themselves for now.

Thanks for the post back.
Sorry we couldn't help you initially, but glad you got it sorted.

Hi glad you have resolved. I appear to have the same problem. Would you mind giving me a bit more detail of which wires were faulty and the location of the relay? Much appreciated

on our Ducato based 1995 Hymer our headlights failed an MOT because of reduced light output that was down to corroded and melted connectors at the back of the headlight bulbs
You can buy replacement bulb connectors with fly leads and stitch these in to the old wiring
