Ok,

I have been searching the net for clues regarding this, and found several. However my problem remains. It all started in the beginning of march, some weeks after having bought the Hymer Swing...

While driving on a short, 5-day holiday, I noticed on the first day that the red injection lamp was lit. I did not notice any power loss, nor any increase in fuel consumption. The light remained constantly lit on the first day. 2nd day, occasionally the light went off, then on again. 3rd, 4th and 5th day the light went off after some minutes of driving and then remained off the rest of the drive.

After some weeks of stand still, the light was red again while driving, and has been since.

Old owners (last 2) have no memory having had this problem.

I have been checking various connectors for bad contact, but everything so far is clean, dry and nice. Fuses also checked. The ones in front of the passenger are ok. I found 2 fuses, as well as some relays placed in the middle of the engine compartment behind a plastic cover. They are also ok. I found fuses in the right front of the engine compartment. All big-size (40, 50 & 60 amps) are ok, however one small sized is completely incinerated. Cabling to this holder is red, approximately 3mm in diameter without insulation. Could this be the origin of the above problem? If so, what should the correct fuse size be?

Thanks from Sweden!

Hello all again,

After having been away for a week, it is now possible for me to attend to the forum again.

A code read has yet to be done. I understand its a CAN-bus thingy, but where do I locate the terminal, and does the Felkodslasare-PRO-151363 that can be bought at Biltema do the trick, or do you have other suggestions on code readers?
However hopefully I have succeeded to attach a photo of the mentioned fuse block. On the photo the the melted fuse terminal is already removed, but the below description hopefully can help. The fuses, from front ant backwards are:
40A
40A
60A
30A
50A
REMOVED MELTED FUSE
2A

Btw, the two red terminated cables are the ones that were connected to the melted fuse holder

If your van is a 2001 model motorhome, then it might not be the jtd version of the 2.8. If I were you I would verify this by giving the engine number to a Fiat dealer, they can check it. Also your vehicle has definitely not got the CANBUS system. These started with the X2/50 (2007 facelift models).

The cover of your fusebox should tell you the purpose of the melted fuse. I can check my 2003 Ducato to see if it is the same and might be able to work it out.

Now, a code read has been done with a CAS804 Code Reader, and it returned "no codes". Injection light is still on.

I have still not tried installing a new fuse holder and fuse, as a eplacement for the melted one because I have no clue whatsoever what kind of fuse it should be, except that the original fuse holder can have fuses of the smaller size, ie about 20mm long.

While driving, avarything seems fine. What I have noticed is that both fans so far are not running. They are not jammed, but have no power. Even though engine is at operating temperature. Now, we do not have heat in sweden so maybe the fans are still not needed thanks to natural air flow, but, could this have something to do with the melted fuse and the injection error light?

maingate: the only cover for the fuses are the ones that cover every single fuse. These have no markings whatsoever, neither function nor Amps. About model, the registration of the base vehicle is 2001, and motorhome is 2002. It says 2.8JTD on the vehicle, and the Specs say 94kW acording to registration.

Hi it might be worth checking the wiring connection to num. 3 and 4 injector, I seem to remember reports that the wires are a bit stretched and can lose connection intermittently on the JTD, I think the fix was to re-route them.

Not sure about your melted fuse can you tell what colour it was, this will tell you the amp value and may give you some clue.

I will check the injector cables (located under the cover, right?).
Regarding the melted fuse, maybe I should call it incinerated fuse. There is nothing left at all from the fuse, except one of the metal plug pin, and the holder has a quite wide melted hole. my guess would be that there has been a realy bad contact, thus resulting in extreme heat.

Fans, anyone?

Yes the injector cables are under the cover, they connect directly on to the injectors.

Sorry can’t help with the fuse.

I checked my fusebox yesterday and it has no resemblance to yours by the sound of it. I have a the large fuses (30, 40, 60 amps etc) and a number of the mini blade fuses but no standard 20 mm ones. Perhaps a photograph of the fusebox would help.

Hi. Just wondering if this is an added on fuse box tow bar, alarm system maybe.

If all the electrical bits are working it must belong tosomething that has been removed.

*update*

Today I decided to replace the incinerated fuse and fuse holder. I installed a 10A fuse, and, well, nothing happened. Fuse is not burnt so far, and injector light is still on.
All injector cables have been re-fitted, and there is no significant tension on anyone of them. Injector light is still on.

About added equipment: Yes, a Tow bar is installed, as well as an alarm system. Small fuses could be servicing these.

About electrical fans: I decided to make a "heat test". While having parked the camper, I revved up the motor to 3000rpm during several minutes, while engine temperature was slowly rising. After the temp gage needle passed the first dash above middle temp, the lower fan started. Engine temp dropped and fan stopped again. Upper fan never started. Injector light is still on.

QUESTION: When should the upper fan start?

Hi. Sounds like the fan is doing what it is supposed to do.

I take my van down to Spain on a regular basis; even on hot day’s I have never noticed the second fan start.

Regarding your injector light you really need to get the fault codes read, it could be anything no point in stumbling around in the dark.

As mentioned in post #5, a code read has been performed, but there are no fault codes present.

So, concluding, my camper has a injector warning light lit on the dashbord, but no faultcodes, no performance loss and no noticeable faults.

Should I remove the lightbulb?
Should I scrap the fault code reader (see post #5)?

Hi. Sorry I missed post 5, just had a quick look at your code reader and I see it is OBD2 compliant, I thought that OBD2 only worked on 2004 models onwards for diesels.

I may well be wrong but I think there should be a sticker somewhere on the van saying OBD2 if it is compliant.

It seems very strange to have the injector light on with no fault codes logged.

Get need fiatecuscan and a cheap kkl cable from ebay.
I have several scanners and even on the 2005 models after eobd was mandated by europe I get nonsense reading from some sensors.

Hi,
I own the same camper with the same Fiat 2,8 JTD engine, and we are having the same issue. The lamp is lit up constantly.
on previous service done at the workshop we asked them to check what could be the problem but they where not able to find the cause. they found no codes or problems to the motor performance. i find this very strange..

Even after three years passing, this thread is still alive...

Since my last post, I actually managed to do a code read and as I remember it there was a "general" error, that amongst other things could be related to the 2:nd fan.
Since then, ie the last three years, the red lamp has been constantly on and thus I have had no problems at all driving approximately 15000km. If you, or anyone else should have this red light problem and find a solution, please post it at this thread.

Cheers from Sweden

I also seem to have a similar problem with the red 'engine' light coming on.It went off after swithing the ignition off and standing for several minutes. all was ok for about 1,000 miles then it came on again ! the motor started to run lumpy for a while then lost some power requiring me to change down a cog to get up any gradient. i suspected injectors, but from reading some of the posts fuel pump/s seem to be more likely - is this the more likely ? Injectors seem to be a very expensive items ! regards Mike ( 2.8 JTD 2004 Spanish reg. from new. 90,000 Km. LHD Adria Twin)
