Hi,
We are touring Spain and the motorhome ( Ducato 2.8jtd '05 swb ) has developed a problem with headlights.
When on dipped headlights, indicating left or right, switching to main beam or just touching the switch stalk sometimes causes the headlights to go out ( including the dashpod lights ).
Wiggling the stalk about causes them to come back on again but I am dreading the switch ( which I assume is the problem ) failing completely.

Does anyone have any ideas ? eg is the stalk switch a known problem, if so is it just a simple job to change and is it just the stalk assembly that needs changing ?

I have searched the forum for similar problems but only found reference to some requests for how you remove the steering column covers but no answers.

Hope someone can help .

Its all pretty self explanatory as you drill down through the layers

Before removing and refitting the Air Bag module the following preliminary operations must be carried out: (1) turn the ignition key to the OFF position and extract it; (2) wait for 2 minutes before continuing; (3) remove the battery housing cover, disconnect the negative battery terminal and insulate the leads; (4) wait for 5 minutes before continuing.

Remove airbag:

1. Undo the 3 retaining bolts. (back of steering wheel)

- Partly remove the Air Bag module.

2. Disconnect the electrical connection

3. Remove the Air Bag module.

- Place the Air Bag module in the special cupboard, resting it on a free surface with the bag facing upwards.

Remove steering wheel:
1. Remove the plastic protection. (cover over nut)

2. Disconnect the electrical connection for clock spring and radio controls

3. Undo the fixing nut.

4. Remove the steering wheel.

Remove clock spring:
1. Undo the fixing bolts and move the clock spring aside.

2. Disconnect the electrical connection (2a) and remove the clock spring (2b).

Remove steering column trim:
1. Remove 4 bolts/screws holding bottom cover and remove
2. Remove two bolts holdint top cover and remove

Remove stalks:
1.Disconnect the electrical connections.

2. Loosen the collar bolt. (underneath)

3. Remove the steering column switch unit.

Thanks Moodrater -
A great detailed guide to dismantling the steering wheel/column assembly.
Looks a job best left till I get back home just hope the switch keeps working till then.

Hi Moodrator,

Seem to have a problem with the lights not working on my 2003 Ducato motorhome and I noticed a little puff of smoke from the top of steering column then no lights recently, so assume problem may be wiring loom chafing on steering column.

Do you happen to know whether Fiat have had a recall on this issue??

Can you send me any details on how I might repair this problem?

Thanks
