Hi,
I am new to this site and there seems to be a wealth of information here. I own a Hymer campervan on a 2002 Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD.
I have read many previous posts about the unreliability of these horns and I like may previous posters could not figure out where the horn is!!! Well now I think I know anyway.
My horn problem is a little different, in that when I am parked up and sometimes whilst driving the horn works perfectly. Other times it just will not work at all and this is 75% of the time whilst driving.
Anybody got any ideas????

Horn switch. Remove steering wheel, adjust contacts, refit wheel

If it has an airbag can you still just remove steering wheel?

- Before removing and refitting the Air Bag module the following preliminary operations must be carried out: (1) turn the ignition key to the OFF position and extract it; (2) wait for 2 minutes before continuing; (3) remove the battery housing cover, disconnect the negative battery terminal and insulate the leads; (4) wait for 5 minutes before continuing.

FOLLOW ALL THE RECOMMENDED SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS (see assembly 5580C - AIR BAG SYSTEM).

Static electricity can set them off in theory so you're supposed to wear a static strap never seen a mechanic or dismantler wear one but might be wise not to wear crimplene :p

This is a 2002 model and does not have an airbag. But the problem is not the contacts in the steering wheel I can assure you,

Sod all that! Why take your steering wheel apart before checking the horn itself! If you know where it is put a meter across its terminals (unplug it so your not deafened) and press the horn switch lots of times. If it fails to work once in testing, look at the relay first. Again much easier to swap than taking your vehicle apart. Check the horns terminal pins for corrosion. A brass brush will soon clean them up.

Good idea in theory Dcthebear, but in practice not a goer I am afraid. This is because whenever I am parked up on my drive the horn works fine, it is only when I am driving that the horn fails to work most of the time.
Oh that it was a consistent fault, then it would be easy to find the problem!!!

How do you know it's not the steering wheel contacts? I presume you have tested them some how. In my earlier post, I mention horn contacts that need adjusting. These are not the contacts under the horn push in the centre of the wheel, but the 2 contacts under the wheel, that run on the sliprings attached to the lower side of the wheel. The 2 contacts are attached to the flasher/lights combi switch. I have repaired in excess of 100 of these in the past 12 years or so, they are a common problem. If this is not your fault, then could you advise us what checks, repairs you have already done. I think I may have posted pics of the said contacts some time back. Search earlier posts. Good luck.

Hi Arkk,
I apologise I misunderstood your original post and thought you meant the contacts in the centre of the wheel. I knew that it was not those as as when the fault occured it was the same if I pressed the LHS or the RHS side of the horn or the centre in fact!!
I did not realise you were referring to the two contacts under the wheel. I will inspect these (if I can find them being technically incompetent as I am) and let you know the results.
Thank you for taking the time to clarify things.
