Thanks. I've read the same. It's never been in any sort of impact situation and the light only stayed on for the first time two weeks ago when I moved the van 5.0m to get my trailer out from behind. Prior to that it had been parked up for 4 weeks.
My problem is that I'm getting different stories from each person I talk to. Some say the ECU is a use once unit and, once coded to a vehicle, cannot be coded to another. Others say that's rubbish and they are 'plug and play' although the error code will need removing before it'll 'play' so just go to the wreckers and get another.
It's going to the Dealer on Friday for more intense diagnostic (first time done with Fiat Examiner). His man says he should be able to distinguish between an ECU fault and a connection fault. Others say that's not possible.
My main problem is that if it does need an ECU, and a new one, they are £420 + VAT from Fiat. With fitting and the various diagnostic tests that's taking the total bill towards £700 including VAT. If I have to pay that for the only way it can be fixed I'll have to bite the bullet but I'm looking for someone that really knows what they are talking about and who I can trust to give me the honest answer before I dive in. Also, I'm wary that I might pay all that for a new ECU and it might not fix the problem!
If it helps anybody, the part number on the ECU is 1336355080.
