Air Bag light has come on and a diagnostic indicates an intermittent internal fault in the Air Bag ECU. I'm told that the unit is a 'use once' item and that it has to be replaced with a new one that then has to be coded to the vehicle. Fiat price is 'not cheap'. Anyone any experience of this issue and/or an alternative source other than the Main Dealer?

Not much help other than what you have been told already but below is taken from the eLearn manual:
"The warning light will stay on if an impact of a certain severity causes the activation of the system. The control unit must be replaced because its memory cannot be deleted
The Air Bag warning light is the smart type with a control circuit inside the panel that ensures the warning light is properly connected to the control unit".
I was talking to an owner the other day with the same problem & the Fiat Dealer managed to get it go off (cost $256) but told them if it came on again it needed an Airbag ECU replacement at a cost of $1,150.00 au.
Cheers

Thanks. I've read the same. It's never been in any sort of impact situation and the light only stayed on for the first time two weeks ago when I moved the van 5.0m to get my trailer out from behind. Prior to that it had been parked up for 4 weeks.

My problem is that I'm getting different stories from each person I talk to. Some say the ECU is a use once unit and, once coded to a vehicle, cannot be coded to another. Others say that's rubbish and they are 'plug and play' although the error code will need removing before it'll 'play' so just go to the wreckers and get another.

It's going to the Dealer on Friday for more intense diagnostic (first time done with Fiat Examiner). His man says he should be able to distinguish between an ECU fault and a connection fault. Others say that's not possible.

My main problem is that if it does need an ECU, and a new one, they are £420 + VAT from Fiat. With fitting and the various diagnostic tests that's taking the total bill towards £700 including VAT. If I have to pay that for the only way it can be fixed I'll have to bite the bullet but I'm looking for someone that really knows what they are talking about and who I can trust to give me the honest answer before I dive in. Also, I'm wary that I might pay all that for a new ECU and it might not fix the problem!

If it helps anybody, the part number on the ECU is 1336355080.

Hi, did you ever get your airbag light sorted? If so what was the problem ? I have a light on too so am interested. Cheers.

Get the codes read before you start thinking ecu it much more likely to be something simple like the wiring to the center front recoil.

Hi, first time to post. Reading previous posts a few people have had the same problem with the air bag warning light that I am having ie. the warning light staying on for no apparent reasonAbout 18 months ago the airbag warning light came on in my motorhome just as the DOE was due. I brought it to the garage and after 2 days they had cleared the light and replaced the contact spiral and charged me "an arm and a leg". The fault has returned ( still a month or two to the DOE), I have now checked the old contact spiral and find no fault with it so not going back to that garage. Can't find a post that got to a solution for the problem. Any ideas.

From what I can gather from your post the airbag light has come on again after nearly a year. You have checked the clockspring (spiral...) and are not taking it back to the garage.......why? It obviously seems to be a different fault and without a code reader you stand little chance of finding the fault.

If you disconnect the battery, then disconnect all the connectors for the air bags, plus the trigger units.
You need to buy electrical contact cleaner, spray all the connectors and leave to dry.
I do it on all peugeots/fiats and it works 99% of the time.
Do not use wd40.
Only the electrical cleaner removed surface oxidation from the contacts.
Then wipe the codes.
I'm a mechanic,and I use a snap on ethos to do it.
Hope it works for you.

Did you get your Airbag ECU problem fixed. I have the same problem and having great difficulty in finding a second hand ecu. My garage quotes bearly £500 for a new one.

Hi
Have a look on eBay as they are for sale on there as well as some of these places say that they can repair them or just Google "Fiat Ducato Airbag ECU"
It helps if you say which model Ducato you have.
or try here - http://www.airbagreset.com/
Cheers

I can recommend this company and have used them twice before to re set ECU's after air bag deployment....

I don't work for or have any association with the company

Our airbag module failed at 400 miles on our new 2016 Ducato motorhome, replaced under warranty but had to wait a week for the part to come from FIAT. Apparently the airbags will not activate when the warning light is on.
