Hi
I have about 3warning lights on the dash of my Fiat Ducato *2.2 100 X250 van that are dimly lit, even when the engine is off. I took it to a Fiat dealer who replaced the body control box/computer. They told me it was fixed but the problem is still there. Because it is a camper they say that it could be the converters fault and basically they don't want to look any more or are stumped.
The 3lights are unrelated but are on the same side of the dash so must have something in common, maybe an earth? They are the antislip, *radiator water level and the spanner. They are dimly lit and do not affect the driving of the vehicle. When I turn on, all the other warning lights are lit for a few seconds and then go out as they should do but these 3 do not. I am pretty sure the anti slip light used to do this.
I have also noticed that when the cab door is opened, these 3lights come on slightly brighter but not fully lit. They go back to very dim when the courtesy lights go out.
I would ignore them but know that any dash warning light on will fail an MOT.
Can anyone offer advice please on what might be the problem.
Thanks
Tribby

Strange one! See if you can change the instrument cluster to another vehicle, if the fault transfers, it is a faulty cluster. Is the vehicle a conversion to a motor home, or was it built up from new? I'm wondering if someone has connected interior lights in to a wrong wire. Also check all earths, particularly under dash.

Cheers Arkk.
Its a factory built conversion. I've had it nearly two years and the fault has only just materialised. Fiat want me to get it checked out with the supplier but I don't fancy a 600 mile round trip. I may ask them if they are willing to try swapping the instrument cluster before I take it up with the supplier and surprised they didn't try this first before changing the body control box.
cheers tribby

Sounds like a bad earth wire try attaching a new one to a good earth point and the instrument panel.

Thanks John.
Is the dash easy to get apart. It looks like its a sealed unit?

DO NOT DISMANTLE or attach any extra wires to the electronic instrument panel unless you are experienced in this field!!! Check any earth wires you can find, connect these with jumpers as a test to battery negative, but don't run wires onto the panel itself without testing, which requires a multimeter and some electrical knowledge.

No I wont take it too far, I might gently wiggle a few wires around the back of the dash and see if there is any change in the lights. I will have to take it back to Fiat and was hoping to point them in the right direction so they didnt spend hours looking for the fault.
Does any one think it could be the main ECU. Would these lights be on when the vehicle is off with a dodgy ECU?
Cheers

I have the vehicle booked in for after Easter in the Fiat garage. It sounds like they made the wrong diagnosis form their initial test. This does not fill me with confidence. I might try and purchase the leads for my lap top to do some tests myself if that is possible.

Update on the problem.*
Now fixed. Fiat originally changed the body computer which did not fix the problem. They eventually changed the dash unit on Friday and all is now working fine.*
Cheers Steve

Hello Tribby, I have a swift on ducato 2.2 2010 and have the same dim glow from the low water level light, was it expensive to correct, was it off the road long. Thanks RICHPAT.

Hi People. did you get this sorted? I've had mine replaced numerous times under warranty and been told that its a pod issue rather than a vehicle problem.

Appreciate any comments on how you rectified it once and for all?

I had the Instrument Cluster replaced under warranty and it worked fine for a couple of years and then it started again but different lights this time. I just ignore them now as I know I will have to pay for another new cluster.
Cheers

In this months edition of MMM it states that Fiat are doing a recall of certain vehicles as they have found the faul that causes some of the lights to be dimly lit.

My Ducato motorhome chassis was built in 2013 and has the dim light problem.
My local fiat dealer says it is a common problem which Fiat are aware of.
I think this is a different problem to the one mention in the March MMM magazine (p33) where the lights actually turn off, and to the poor visibilty one mentioned in the February issue (P26).

I had my panel replaced (on a 2012 Peugeot Boxer) in April 2014 under warranty. I now find the same fault again. The phantom warning lights are only there if Cruise control is on. Looks like a "not fit for purpose" issue if warranty is a problem as the van is now over 3 years old. It certainly feels like an earthing problem, particularly as the van has been idle since October.

Hi Everyone, i would like to introduce myself first of all, not only am i a proud owner of a 2014 FIAT DUCATO AUTO TRAIL FRONTIER Motorhome but i am am also the director of Cartronix. We are Specialists in repairing instrument clusters on motorhomes as well as other vehicles.

Two of our biggest customers in the uk are Motor home dealers. The Faults that have been described on these forums are extremely common and we see them every day.

Dimly lit LED warning lights and draining of the battery are the most common faults as well as the gauges sticking.

The LEDs Fail for 2 reasons, jump starting flat batteries and Cheap unreliable components.

Solution: We Replace all the LEDs with Superior European Quality ones and give a lifetime warranty.

The Gauges often fail when they dry out inside and seize up when the vehicles have been left over the winter months.

Solution: We Replace the Motors with upgraded European Motors which have a protective coating inside and again give a lifetime warranty.

We have a solution for all problems and charge a fixed rate of £150 inc vat to repair these instrument cluster faults.

We have a next working day Postal service if you would like to remove and send us your instrument cluster to us for repair or failing that if you fancy a trip to our workshop in Hampshire we can remove repair and refit your instrument cluster while you wait. Our telephone number is 02392 265986.

Hope to save you all some money and stress.

Happy Motoring.

Richard,
Having had some pretty heavy but unfruitful discussions with Peugeot (and with VOSA) I am intending to go down your repair route. Can you give me any instructions as to how to get at the instrument panel to remove it. It is not at all obvious where to start in removing the trim around it. It would be far easier to courier the panel to you than to drive down to Portsmouth.

I have just spotted in the Training notes on this forum that diagnostic equipment is needed on refitting the panel so it looks as though I need to drive to Portsmouth after all!
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron, because its your cluster that is repaired there is no need for coding, it is simply a case of plug and play. All your coding and mileage is retained throughout the process!

To get the cluster out there are 2 screws at the front of the top cover to undo, and the lid/cover is held in with 3/4 clips at front edge nearest windscreen, you have to give a firm tug on this to unclip it. Then there is 2 screws holding it in position and a plug with a safty clip on at the back.

Hope this helps!

Thank you SO much, Richard! I will investigate and then get in touch. You have been very helpful - unlike Peugeot so-called Customer Care.
