Hi to everyone!
We have a 2.8jtd from 2003 with a ZF gearbox with a problem.
It is shifting gears at a very low rpm, so when you drive 45 m/h (70km/h) it is already in highest gear, and when you go uphill, you´ll have to put your right foot down to get a lower gear and when you loosen your foot a bit it goes to the highest gear again, and the whole vehicle starts to shake because of the rpm´s.
A few years ago there was no problem, but in the years the shifting moment went more and more a problem. I can´t find (on the www) and think of any indication why!!!
On top of the chassis, there is a Hymer B644 build on, so 3500kg to push forward.
There are no fault codes in the program, and the ecu is standard.
Thank´s and greetings from Holland,
Klap.

Can you use the manual change ok, and if so does the van perform properly? What mileage has it done, and has the trans been serviced?

The gearbox never had any service, so no oil change.
The ducato has 110.000km driven.
Manual gearshifting is working perfect.
No oil leaking detected in his lifetime.
Thank's!

Your best option at htis stage is to service the trans, it may make a difference, and even if it doesn't cure the fault, it should be serrviced at some stage. If the scanner shows no faults, it rules out the common faults on those- pndr wiring and speed sensor.

oke, we will let it serviced, and we will let you know if it´s solve the problem.
So far thank´s for your time to response.

Hi
Attached is the Citroen Training manual for the ZF 4HP20 a model of which was the transmission that was fitted to the Ducato as well as Citroen cars & a lot of other FWD vehicles. :-
Fiat Ducato with ZF 4 HP20 4 speed front wheel drive transmission.
Transmission model prefix 1019 000 ###.
It has an explanation of the transmission operation as well as diagnostic pages so you might find something in there that might help!
Have also got the WSM for that transmission as well, it is 20MB but seems to be more about overhauling the box with no troubleshooting tables etc.
Also attached is a text file relating to a different problem someone else had with their 244 Auto taken from a post on the FF, might be worth checking the connection which fixed their problem.
It sounds like it is something to do with what was called the governor in old hydraulic controlled automatic transmissions but these electronic ones I would think would be using the speedo sensor on the gearbox to relate road speed etc. Could also be a fault in the electronic throttle or a wiring connection from it to the transmission ECU.
Hope that helps
Cheers

Thank's a lot, I already found the box in the citroen, but it almost runs with little problem, because there is not much found on the net.
I will check the info tommorrow, cause it's sleeping time now.
I will get back at this............
good night to all!

Hi there,
it been a while, but I'm back.
We found a person with knowledge about this transmission, he repairs this types of gearboxes for a living.
So thank you all, it's pleasant to know there are people out there, who wants to help other people with a problem.(y)

Hi Klap,

Only 9 years have passed since your message, so probably you will not receive a notification anymore.. Could you tell me who is the specialist in the netherlands?
