Will be renting a motorhome on the Continent in the spring. It is supposed to be on a Fiat Ducato X/250 chassis with a 6 position manual transmission. I am familiar with 4 position manual transmissions and am curious as to which 2 positions are the "extra" ones and in what situations they are used. Thanks for any information you can give an old submariner.

You just drive it the same as you do your 4 speed gear box except there are two extra ones after fourth. You will know when its time to change up or down just like you do know.
On the modern diesel Ducato MH's I have owned the cruising rpm in any gear is 2000rpm which in my 3ltr equates to 60mph in 6th gear. Roughly it is 50mph in 5th gear and 40mph in 4th. You can easily trail round roundabouts in 3rd.
The gear lever configuration is:
far left up = reverse
left top = 1st
bottom left = 2nd
mid top = 3rd
mid bottom = 4th
right top = 5th
right bottom = 6th

Note that new X250's have Euro 5 engines whilst the link is to Euro 4 ones so there may be minor changes { Euro 4 & 5 refer to emmission standards).
