hi , i have a 2005 05 plate ducato 2.0 turbo diesel .

Driving the other day my brake pedal went rock hard and the brakes failed .

The pedal is still rock had and you need a elephant sat on it to get the van to stop !

Been told it could be the servo but that's £1000 fitted so is there anything else it could be before i spend that amount of money ????

thanks .

I´ve heard... that it can be due to a clog in the hydraulic lines. If the fluid is dirty etc. Not sure if this will cause all brakes to fail though. Thats bout as far as my knowledge goes.

Hi
It could be the servo as you have been told or possibly the vacuum pump located on the back of the injection pump could have failed (more likely). With Disc brakes unlike the old drum type there is no self energising action so without a vacuum &/or servo (which works off the vacuum) the initial "give" with the brake pedal disappears & you have a rock hard pedal with little result from pushing the pedal.
If you pump all the vacuum out of the servo on a petrol car (which doesn't need a vacuum pump) with the engine not running, when the vacuum stored in the servo is exhausted you get the same result.
I would be checking the vacuum hoses/pipes from the vacuum pump on the rear of the injection pump (on 2.8JTD models, not sure about the 2.0) to the servo located behind the brake master cylinder. Most likely it is the vacuum pump itself as I have not heard of many servos failing.
Hope that helps
