Hi all I have a 1998 2.8d with around a 160k
My problem is I have replaced the front crank seal due to a leak and still have the leak?

Whilst replacing the seal I decided to replace the cam belt plus tensioner etc.
I have used genuine parts and a genuine seal. but still I have a leak from the seal.

I have checked all my breathers and all are fine, I am using 20/50 mineral oil (so nice and thick)

My question is about tensioning of the cam belt, I presumed that the black plunger that presses against the tensioner pulley mounting was an (automatic) tensioner?

Although the belt seems tight? could this be pulling on the crank and leading the seal to leak?

Failing that maybe my crank is worn? I will need to strip every thing again to confirm this. and am hoping as a last ditch effort that maybe my cambelt is causing the issues????

Thank you for your time

Doubt the crank would have worn at that sort of mileage; it is very easy to damage those seals when fitting, I’ve done it myself many times.
Did you give the seal a good coat of oil before you fitted it, did it go in straight and even?

Hi and thankyou for the reply. im unsure how i could have damaged the seal? The seal is mounted on a plate which comes assembled and has 6 retaining screws which hokd the plate on the block. I used oil and it apeared to go on straight and without any difficulty.

Does anyone happen to know about cambelt tension or am I barking up the wrong tree.

I'll be honest it looks like I will be stripping it again, hopefully I can plead with fiat for a replacement seal? Cheers

Hi Just an update, I have to thank cris1117 for his input.
I stripped the seal out and found that I had indeed caught the lip during fitting.

Doh!

Thanks again
