Have a Y reg 2001 1.9d panel van.Gearbox has virtually no syncro on 2nd or 5th gears.
Have had quote of approx £1000 to overhaul box which seems excessive.
Very difficult to check which actual gearbox fitted as apparently fiats say there are about 10 variations??
Does anyone know how to positively identify the gearbox and any suggestions on how not to spend £1000!!
If I could source a guaranteed second hand box that would fit would be happy.

Welcome to the Fiat Gearbox club! See my recent post regarding 1999 19TD campervan. My synchro went on 2nd. £1400 for gearbox and clutch, despite the best efforts of the (reputable) company it went back four times. Collected yesterday and awaiting to see if it is finally cured. As for the different gearboxes the company go off the VIN from the DVLA data base using the registration. There is no number on the box alone. The only worry I have is the handbook states Tutela ZC75 Synth (SAE75w90EP) for the oil and the local Fiat agent gives Tutela SAE75w85 Synth though the difference is so small I cannot imagine it is causing the repeat problem.
