Hi,
I have a 1993 Ducato 1.9 diesel non turbo high top panel van, with a Herald Emblem conversion on it. I have been doing it up over the last year and I have become very attached to it. I have done a lot to save weight on it such as removing the tow bar, taking out unnecessary kit such as an extra table, all the carpet, the spare wheel and jack which I have replaced with a tyre weld kit and I’ve put alloy wheels on it. That has saved a lot of weight.
My problem is that it is just too slow, I know it’s a camper van and never going to be quick but I don’t want to feel like I am holding up other traffic.
My question is, can I upgrade it to a 1.9 turbo diesel by swapping the parts over from another Ducato? Does make a good difference if I do? As regards finding a suitable engine, are there any other Fiat vehicles which use the same engine and turbo manifold? Does the next shape Ducato have the same engine.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I have searched on the net and not really come up with anything, the only helpful advice I have found is on here, about why it is difficult to upgrade to a 2.5 diesel because of differences in wheel size, gear box, brakes and some suspension parts.
If the turbo idea is a no good, are there any performance items I can add to the existing engine, such as air filter?
Thanks for replies.
Ross

Hi.
To be honest the 1.9 engine is not going to be anything but hard work, a slogger.
In my experience the bolt on goodies don’t live up to their claims for power improvement at least not noticeable.
If you’re really that attached to the van I would be looking at a bigger engine and gearbox maybe from a commercial breakers, something pre ecu, 2.5 litre or bigger but it’s not an easy job unless you have the engineering skills and equipment to DIY it will be expensive.
The pre ecu is assuming your current van doesn’t have an ecu.

The 1.9td is only 20% more power but 50% more torque which should makes a difference the 2.5td is 40% more power and 80% more torque but that torque is at lower revs - 2000rpm vs 2500rpm which is going to be better for hauling its fat ass up hills.

For fast motorway driving the 1.9td may actually be slightly more economical as you would be driving closer to max torque but I'd go for the 2.5.

If are going to do a swap get a complete donor vehicle so you have everything you need.

Hi ,
I have a 1993 ducato Herald hight top 1.9 TD and she will do 70, how does yours compare.
Cheers
Kenny

My 2002 D10 1.9TD HiTop camper will go higher than 70 -- downhill with the wind behind it :p. It takes it's time even getting to 70 and show it the slightest incline or headwind and it can't maintain it. I would have gone for a 2.5TD or even a 2L petrol in preference to the 1.9 but had to settle for this to get the camper conversion I wanted.

I'm now seriously looking at trying to get the fuel system adjusted to give a bit more oomph. Trouble is it looks like costing the thick end of £400 and will probably jack up my insurance.

Hi, I'm newby looking to boost 1989 1.9 tb engine on my Ducato based moho.
Wiki states The Fiat Croma was the first passenger car in the world to have a direct injection Diesel (Turbo D i.d.) engine, going on sale in 1988.[5][8] The 1.9 L fitted with a turbocharger with direct injection produces 92 PS (68 kW).
Any chance to upgrade direct injection to the Ducato?

Simple answer is No it is not possible to alter your indirect injection engine to direct injection.

Thank you, could you please confirm from photos above my moho has 1.9 d turbo engine.
Can my engine could be replaced with Croma 1994 engine

Google search 280a1000
Should give you plenty of info about engine and what it should look like.

I do not know if the other engine would be a straight forward replacement.

The engine in the attached photo is an intercooled, turbo charged, mechanical injection diesel engine.
There is a large bore air hose connected to the air filter and going behind the engine to the turbo. Also two hoses to connect to an intercooler near the air filter. The mechanical injection pump is visible at the lower LHS of the picture.

If wishing to change the engine for a different version, a good starting point would be to search on Wikipedia for Fiat Ducato. The article lists the various engines fitted to each version of the Ducato and other Sevel vehicles.

The suitability of each possible engine would need careful checking, and if you do not have the necessary knowledge to identify a turbo diesel engine from the attached photo, then you should think carefully before starting on such a project.
