Hello, My turbo (failing) started smoking on idle. Time to change. Ordered exchange from local truck center off chassis no. and MHI turbo supplied on exchange.Found it strange on collection as K03 is originally fitted to van.Queried it and was told it is the right one, no question. Different make does not matter.MHI turbo now fitted and whistling like a distant siren when driving slowly and squealing like a banshee when accelerating or hill climbing around 2000 revs plus.Looked into it on internet and found a listing that the MHI turbos were fitted '99 to '01 and K03 fitted '01 to '03. Can anyone help.Is this MHI OK for my '03 or not. Someone said its squealing due to air leak somewhere, others have said wrong turbo. I'm in a pickle ???????????????

Did you get a complete turbo or just a core.

Maybe an oil flow problem.
Maybe the wastegate is stuck.

Sounds like a dud though, did you check the shaft for play before fitting it, you should have zero play axially (lenghtways) and a *tiny* amount radially if there is oil in the core you may not even be able to feel any radial play in a good turbo.

Pull off the intake hose and check the shaft for play.

It was a complete turbo. No play on the spline back and for slight play left to right. Waste gate not stuck and oil feed ok. Baffled! I'm thinking more and more an air leak making the squeal. End of my tether on this one. Any help!!

My dads method for checking for air leaks is to wrap the joint and suspect areas in cling wrap abviously won't work on the manifold side. If its whistling when driving slowly will it not whislte when you rev it you could get underneath and pinpoint the noise while someone works the accellerator. The other thing I can think of is the exhaust wheel rubbing on the heat shield.

The mhi turbo is pulled together with a central clip from recollection if the housings and core weren't cleaned or aligned properly the clip may not be enough to pull them together.

There are two different rebuild kits for these cores one has a stepped back on the wheel and a correspondign heat shield, refered to as flatback and superback. Maybe they rebuilt with the wrong kit.
