Hi.
I have a Maxi 2.8, y2000 with a cable operated clutch.
When I bought the van, it was very cheap, and I suspected a fairly worn clutch plate, but thought I would run the van for a while, and see how it went before spending too much on it. Well, it has been brilliant, so I am wondering whether to get the clutch changed.
It is not slipping in any gear, but the pedal travel is high, and the clutch engagement is quite 'soft' when the clutch pedal is released.
A friend recommended to me just to change the cable, as they stretch, and this may be the only problem.
So what I need is advise as to whether this sounds right, and whether the soft takeup is normal for these vans as I have never had one before.
By the way, it changes gear smoothly with no apparent problems, so there is no immediate worry, except 'bolting the stable door'

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Just took my '98 2.5TDi out & made a point of checking feel of clutch. I would agree with you that it feels a 'soft' engagement with no real biting point.

The manual recommends that the clutch pedal is adjusted so that it is level with the brake pedal. There is a nut & thread at the gearbox end of the outer clutch cable to do this. With the pedal correctly adjusted I find that the drive is taken up about halfway up from the floor. (I think that one of the signs of a nearly worn out clutch is for the drive to be taken up close to the end of the pedal travel)

Hope this helps.

Hi.
Thanks.
If your van also has a soft biting point, I think I will keep running it, maybe change the cable, as there is no slipping.
