I have a 1.9TD Ducato Bessacar camper van (1999). It recently had the compulsory gearbox rebuild following water ingress to the gearbox. After about 1000 miles I noticed an oil leak from th gearbox so returned to the rebuilder. They said the leak was from the speedo drive and the drive gear had worn on its top face and lifted allowing oil to escape. They replaced this foc but said the speedo needle was kicking and thus loading the speedo drive gear. They also said that the fault may be in the speedo head which seems slightly tenuous. Could anyone tell me of likely causes for the needle kicking and if so does it lead to the drive gear wear and oil leakage?

Yes done the mod., how on earth did the factory not see that as a problem? Anyway have purchased a new speedo cable and will have a go at fitting it just to eliminate it from the problem. Gearbox end is ok but not yet sure about the speedo end......Thankd for your responce. Tidewatcher.

OK I obtained a new speedo cable (1999 is still cable drive). When fitting it the cable run at the back of the speedo was very tight due to an interface being fitted between the speedo cable input on the speedo head and the cable. This interface is about two inches long and has an electrical output so is obviously some form of speed sensor. Also the wring from it does not run into the original Fiat harness so it would appear to be an add on. Having left this out everything appears to work as normal. Has anyone any idea what this is and its purpose. The van was converted from new by Bessacar and they assure me it is nothing to do with them....I just hate mysteries....

I wondered about that, probably the most likely. Thanks. Incidentaly we are heading for Dublin next week for my daughters wedding hence the edginess regarding possible mechanical problems....Thanks again
