I have a 2001 camper with 2.8jtd engine, I'm considering a swap for 2002 but not sure what type of engine it has, dealer just says 2.8. From what I read so far it could be 2.8i dTD or 2.8jtd, how do I tell? I'm told that the jtd is more economical, better emissions, a tiny bit more powerful common rail type, is that right?

The jtd I have now has been excellent, so I don't want to go backwards.

So, anyone got any idea how I tell the 2 types apart? Is there something to look for under the bonnet? (I can't see them side by side)

and is jtd really better?

IDTD also a great engine its still mechanic pump you'd see it if you lifted the bonnet, you may get marginally more mpg from the common rail but the idtd injectors and pump will probably outlive the common rail one. Why not get the vin from the dealer then you can check all the details on eper.fiatforum.com

Why are you thinking of swapping? - better the devil you know and all that.

Hi thanks for the reply, I see there's also a thread saying common rail doesn't like dirty fuel and is more expensive to repair. Reason for thinking of a swap is that it's a motorhome and has a different living setup which I would like. But don't necessarily want to go backwards mechanically.

All high pressure diesel systems are the same, the pressures are so high that any reduction in lubricity or anything abrasive can wipe out the pump and injectors. The price for rebuilt injectors is coming down but the rebuild process relies on visual inspection of the components which is only as reliable as the operator.

You could rebuild the idtd pump and injectors yourself with high rate of succes.
