HI all.
I really hope someone can help as a matter of urgency..
We have an N reg Fiat Ducato 2,5 TD
in January we had a second hand gearbox as the original failed and lost the gears.
a month or 2 back we lost the clutch.
Turns out the pivot pin had come out.
They knocked it back in ( its supposed to be a tight fit) but said they really didnt feel as tho it was very hard to get in.
It has come out twice since then.
They have made a bracket on the gearbox to try and keep the pivot in - basically a bolt that screws onto the head of the pin ..
but it has come out again this evening.
Until they have a look tomorrow ( again ) we dont know exactly how it has failed yet - but this is a working van and like most business and money is tight - so we need a fix... :)
i see that some folk couldnt get them out and had too drill a hole the other side of the gearbox to get them, out... so in actual fact - what is SUPPOSED to keep the thing in? I assumed it pushed into something in the box - but if you guys drilled them out then how did you get it too stick after?
all help appreciated! :)
cheers

seems the casting where the pin fits is cracked?
there bodging over time has made it worse - if they had just fixed it properly in the first place.....bah!!
hoping they can fix / weld / the box itself where the pin fits.
when you guys drill the box to get the pin out - how do you refit?
has anyone got a picture of diagram of the box as i havent seen it yet and how it fits in... :)

hi all
i was hoping for some insight from you guys.. :(
the crack couldnt be fixed - actually part of the casting that holds the pin had broken off and gone.,
ended up getting a new bell housing fitted to the box and plastic bushes where th pin sits in.
my current worry is i cant see what keeps this in.
the bloke at the garage ( supposed clutch specialist bloke ) doesnt know either - he has pressed the pin in by hand this time till the top is flush with the bell housing.
I am just worried of it coming out as i can see anything that keeps in it???

Hi
Don't know the situation without having seen the gearbox/bell housing itself, whether this will be of any help but maybe a welsh plug or something similar might be the answer if you can get one the correct size. Or is it possible to drill a hole across the pin hole & put a roll pin in to secure it remembering that it must be able to be removed again so can't be a blind hole - is this possible from the pics if this is your box ??? From your last post it isn't as the pin doesn't go through to the top of the box. The only other type is the newer 244 2.8 type - also a diagram attached.
Attached are 2 pics of the an "early" Ducato gearbox & clutch pin assembly I could find in the info I have, probably not even be the same type of gearbox. Also attached a diagram from the elearn Manual for the 244 model.

Hope this is of some help.
Cheers

Hi

We had the same problem as this, when changing the clutch the pin was seized, we drilled a hole on the front of the gearbox and drifted it out

After about a month the pin came out, losing the clutch told us this, we locktighted the end of the pin and drove it all the way in (MCA sports said the pin was pushed in until flush, it should go in until a hole 50mm deep is left) when the pin is locktighted in place you need to buy from Fiat a plastic locking device, it is basically a bung that taps into place and also holds the pin.

Good luck

sorry guys missed these posts... i thought i got email notifications for this forum and didnt realise folk had posted..

the diagram you posted up is the one free spirit.

and interesting info on the bung. having taken this too a dealer at one point for advice the didnt know why it would come out. there was nothing on the exploded diagrams showing anything apart from the bushes the pin sits in.
we have had the box out again since then as it failed badly somewhere in the diff and lost drive.
EVENTUALLY sourced a second hand box ( these things are tough too find so many variations) so have seen the boxes on the floor now and inspected how it works and fits.
Mything.. certainly on mine on the floor. if you pushed the pin in so there is 50mm of casing above it - my pin would have gone through the bottom of the bottom support bush and the end would be resting up against the inner casing of the box - and the top end of the pin would only just be supported by the casting... - so i worry yours is too far in?? Fiat at my end said flush. and certainly on the box when it was sat on the floor - that was the case.
?? although the bung you mention certainly sounds like some kind of missing piece..
on the new box it came out again. so in the end we made a simple bracket bolted to the box with a bolt and a locknut that screws down onto the head of the pin and holds it in place.
:)
