Coming from the underneath of the drivers side of my 1999 Ducato 2.8i.d.td motor home is a single knock when the engine is put under load IE when changing up from one gear to the next. The engines runs smoothly at all revs when stationery. It has just passed it's MOT within the past two months and I have driven 2000 miles since then. Both Engine mounts seem OK. There is no obvious signs of two bits knocking together. Vehicle has 36,000 miles on clock. This is not a diesel knock, not exhaust pipe knocking, much louder than a simple knock. There is no obvious wear on front tyres, both were renewed in order to past MOT. I would be grateful for any help. Thank you.

father in laws i.d.t.d had exactly the same rattle last time i heard it driveoff both his local fiat garages said no problem.

The drivers side driveshaft goes up to a support/bearing it sounded to me like it was clattering there. He sold it last week so i can't check.

Thanks for the replies. This knock is a single 'knock' when the engine takes up power after changing up to the next gear. I can reduce the 'knock' by keeping the engine revs up whist changing gear by slipping the clutch. The knock is not heard while traveling along the road.

Sounds to me like a possible drive shaft problem. Have you had a look yourself? It maybe worth getting undrneath and trying to twist the offside shaft. Have a go and let me know.

Thanks for your reply. With the motor home's front wheels still on the ground I can confirm that there is no noise, or clatter from either of the drive shafts. They are both the same, ie no slop!

When driving though tight left or right hand turns I have never heard any drive shafts noises that I had previously heard on other vehicles with faulty drive shafts.

Thanks again, all suggestions are appreciated.

Father in laws had exactly the same noise it was definitely not the cv joints I have heard enough bad ones and both fiat garages and a local garage subsequently ruled them out. The only thing I could think of when I heard it was the support / bearing for the middle of the driveshaft like i mentioned, a tiny bit of clearance here would cause a single knock as it came under torque.
