As I travel to Italy two or three times a year in the MH, can somebody enlighten me on what the situation is on coming back. Am I obliged to remove them while driving in the UK? I do not fancy paying £8 everytime I go.

The same must apply to the lorry drivers from the UK or the Continent.. what do they do?

If you use adhesive tape or prism type deflectors stuck on the glass/plastic outer headlamp cover, they will cut off the left (on a RHD car) kick up section of the beam leaving you with just a horizontal beam. This would be legal to use in the UK.

However, you would need to remove them for a MOT test because the UK MOT beam setter equipment needs the left hand kick up to be there to test the beams.

Many modern cars, and most lorries are designed for trans continental use and are fitted with a mechanical lever or electrically operated solenoid on the headlamps to quickly convert them for LH or RH drive road systems.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Do you know I actually made the same enquiry to North West Trucks in Liverpool (also Fiat Commercial dealers!) and they could not tell me. But then again they are the ones that quoted me £800 for changing two wheel bearings on my Fiat Ducato 2.8JTD.

Fiat supply clear plastic clip on headlamp protectors for some models. They have a marked area on them for adhering black sticky plastic masks to cut off the kick up section of the beam. If they are available for the Ducato, and you have normal filament bulbs, you could fit and remove them as required.

I bought a set for my Stilo, but they don't work on my car because it has original gas discharge headlamps. According to Fiat, the only way to convert my car is to buy and fit two LHD headlamps at £852 (GBP) each. To fit them, I would have to remove the wheels, wheel arch liners and front bumper. Sure I'm going to do that at Dover every time I go and return.

I cut two triangular pieces of black sticky backed plastic (yeah, I used to watch Blue Peter) to stick on my lamps. It took a long time to get the correct size, shape and position, but they work perfactly. Having found the correct position, I made a paper template to temporarily stick on the headlamp so I know where to put the black triangles next time.

Only problem with tape on the headlights now is as they are plastic they craze under the tape.
Using white rather than black tape helps but mine are still marked where the tape has been.
