2007 Ducato Fuel Filter

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a special tool required to change the fuel filter element on a 2007 2.3 jtd ducato, i thought it was just a matter of unscrewing the top & replacing the element but the top refuses to budge on both ducato's?

See previous post - http://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/1429...er-2-8jtd.html

"Hi
I think the procedure would be the same for the 3.0 but the difference is the 3.0 fuel filter is a cartridge type rather than the spin-on type used in the 2.8 model. So the complete assembly supposedly has to be removed so that the top of the assembly can be unscrewed to enable the element to be removed. But they also say the same for the 2.8 but it can be done as stated without removing the complete assembly from the firewall.
You will have to try it & see if the 3.0 can be done using the same method, unscrewing the base from the top while in place on the firewall ?? making sure you don't crush or damage the casing. The rapid connector fuel line on the casing side will have to be disconnected along with the water sensor wiring connector to unscrew the bottom casing from the top half otherwise the complete filter assembly will have to be removed from the firewall (2 rapid connector fuel lines & two wiring connectors & slide complete assembly upwards) & done in the vice. There is also a bleed screw on the side of the lower casing. I would think if the lower casing is filled with new diesel to near the top & replaced as in the 2.8 you could use the same multiple ignition on/off method to bleed the air out of the lines.
Cheers "

There is a special tool but I am sure this could be improvised. see pic
Following is the Workshop manual recommeded procedure -
Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
1. Position the fuel filter (1a) in a vice and, using a special tool, undo the plug (1b) complete with filter element and remove it.
- Extract the filter element from its seat.
- Place the new filter element in position.
- Tighten the fuel filter plug.
- Connect the negative battery terminal.

Re: 2007 Ducato Fuel Filter

Hi all i have just renewed fuel filter on my 2007 2.3 ducato, I first removed two fuel pipes inlet & outlet removed two bolts from bulkhead disconnected electric plugs from top & bottom of filter housing, this left me with filter full of diesel which i emptied out into waste container, then lying filter housing on its side placed top black ring in vice and unscrewed filter body by hand, was very surprised how easy it turned, removed top of filter(green part) removed old element cleaned out housing fit new element, refitted in reverse order.I then replaced inlet pipe (top one) swtched on inition till fuel came out of outlet, replaced outlet pipe.(then took instructions from free spirit) tuned on ignition & listened to pump when it stopped making noises started engine checked for leaks and away we went. hope this helps.

Eric

I undid mine in the vice too with a couple of layers of denim rags to stop the plastic being marred, I did it back up with a strap wrench.

Thumbs up Re: 2007 Ducato Fuel Filter

I undid mine in the vice too. Put the lid in the vice becvause its stronger than the body, then get hold of the body wearing those grippy rubbery gloves to unscrew it. No bleeding necesary as the electric pump in the fuel tank filled it up again as soon as I had refited it and turned the ignition on.

The rapid connectors are just like a garage air line where you pull the collar back to release them. There is a special tool, but I managed to do it without.

Re: 2007 Ducato Fuel Filter

I was having difficulty in disconnecting the fuel line connectors so Peter has clarified it for me. He said

You need to push the metal collar back towards the filter body as this releases the plastic elbow so you can pull it out. Pushing the plastic elbow towards the filter body may make it easier to push the metal collar towards the filter body, so you can then pull the plastic elbow out.
There is a special pair of pliers you can buy to do this, but you can usually manage without it. A bit of easing oil around the collar may help.

If you are only filling up from retail forecourt pumps I think it unlikely your fuel filter will really need changing before 100,000 miles. It seems to have been made large enough to hold lots of muck for whitevanman filling up from building site bowsers and cans etc.

So thanks Peter,

Barrie
