'04 Ducato motorcamper 18k on the clock - when first starts up we are noticing a distinct "humming" noise from around top of the engine. EGR valve? Disappears when engine warms up. Even puzzling the garage mechanics. They don't think it is EGR and don't think it is a problem. Could even be coming from lower down in front of engine block. Any ideas, please?

The 2.0 jtd is the PSA dw 10 engine found in lots of citroens, peugeots and the focus etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_EW/DW_engine

You might find more luck getting a mechanic used to listening to those. Hard to say anything from your description, sometimes when you have a little hole in the manifold gasket or if the exhaust is loose etc. you can get a tuneful hum. Or if the engine is breathing when cold you sometimes get a hum under the rocker cover. Loosen the oil filler cap when cold and see if thats it.

Thanks Corkman - since been for Service and they still cannot find the cause - they have ruled out manifold leak - but don't ask me how!!
