I have a 1999 Fiat Ducato 2.8 with a Hymer motorhome body.

We bought it secondhaned and were given three keys, one Burgandy the other two Blue.

The Burgandy key is supposed to be the master key for doing thing but the part of the key you hold has a slot for a coin or fingernail to open it up which we did ,only to find there's no battery in the space where it seems one should go.

I cannot ask the previous owner about it because he's now deceased

Does this mean the whole immobiliser has been immobilsed??

Many thanks

I didn’t explain the Burgundy key very well.
Inside it there is a space for a battery but no contacts for one, no wiring at all.
There is a very small thing that looks how you imagine a “phone bug” to look like but it’s not connected to anything.

How do I tell if the immobilizer is working or not

well basically the master key is used for making new normal blue keys which you should use on a daily basis
if all the keys will start the vehicle you have no problem , just tuck the red master away somewhere safe in case you need to have further keys made

the immobiliser should be working if you get a key sign come up when you switch on the ignition lights , and is shortly thereafter extinguished , enabling the fuel pump

The "very small thing that looks how you imagine a “phone bug” to look like", is a transponder. It picks up it's power supply inductively from an aerial located around the ignition switch. It doesn't need a battery to operate the immobiliser.

Assuming the car starts with the red key, you can test for the presence of a working immobiliser by wrapping the key handle with alluminium foil. This would shield the transponder and prevent the car from starting if it's immobilised.

The red key is needed for programming a new key if you ever need one. It's recommended that you keep it in a safe place and not use it as a normal key for every day use.

Hi

Many thanks for the info, the van is locked in storage at the mo but when we go to visit it we'll try what you say.
My wife says she does remember a key symbol on the dash display that only lasts a few seconds so again what a site this is our third ask and the replies are always right and very quick, many many thanks
