Replacing the 5th gear assembly on a Ducato 2.5tdi?

hi some people are saying that it mayb be possible to replace the 5th gear assembly on my 96 Ducato 2.5tdi camper.

Does anyone have any experience of this?
What kind of part would i need?
Would a haynes manual help me much with this?

any advice would be very useful

cheers

Hi
Here is a website that has some info on the 5th gear on the Ducato, I am not sure if this is relevant to the 2.5 TD but might help
http://www.seered.co.uk/fiat_mmm.htm
There is another site I have found with step by step pics of what's involved in replacing the the 5th gear assembly which at the moment I can't find but if I can will post it up as well.
Cheers

Hi.
The pictures on the link supplied by freespirit look like the same setup as an old croma I had the pleasure of fitting a fifth gear to.
It was a long time ago but as I remember less than an hour to do, with no special tools.
If you’re thinking of DIY why not take the end cover off and have a look?
If it is the same once the cover is off it’s just a couple of nuts on the selector and a staked nut on the fifth gear and lever it off.
Good luck

G'day Freespirit. I see that Garry puts magnets on the bottom of the 5th gear casing. Seems a good idea. Maybe I should do that too - should scare off the gremlins (y)

hi
cheers people for all this information

took the cover of last night and visibally see where sychro teeth were missing from the driver gear sychro.

rang fiat today and would cost £200 for the new gear and then another £200 for the sychro hub/bearing bit.

Do i defo need to replace both of these, or can i just get away with replacing the driver gear which has the sychro teeth on it?

also does anyone know of any cheaper supplier, rather than going direct tpo fiat??

cheers

It is possible to turn one off the gears round but i tried on mine and it still jumped out of 5th so i sudjest changing all. try and find some one who can get you a trade discount

I have have a 1997 Laika motorhome on a 2 litre Fiat Ducato. The fifth gear is jumping out, and I guess I need a rebuild. Reading these posts I wonder does my van have the same gearbox as a 2.8? Can I use a similar fix by replacing just the 5th gear? At the moment the van is in a garage who are trying to hunt down a new gearbox. But a cheaper fix would be welcome. Thanks

Not sure about whether your gearbox model would be the same but here is the updated link direct to Garrys step by step replacement of the 5th gear on his Ducato. Thanks again to Garry for making these pics available for viewing, he can even be emailed from that page if need be. This page link was posted on Motorhome Facts but as they have now began charging subscriptions & as he is not a member can't reply to any questions people might have from the Motorhome facts forum.

Thanks Freespirit, I will follow that up and try to find out today if the 2litre td and the 2.5tdi share the same box.

I went to the garage today and it looks as if the gearbox on my 1997 2 litre is the same with the fifth gear hiding under a seperate cover, the garage are going to take a look on Monday so fingers crossed. Thanks for all the information, looks as if the forum is going to save me a few bob. Thanks everyone

My 2 litre ducatto jumps out of fifth gear I have used Garry Griggs site to get details about how to change the damaged cogs, but having removed the inspection cover there doesn't seem to be any damage to the cogs do you have any ideas what to look for next thanks in advance Dave
