Hello to all,

I am looking on advise, schematics, breakdown (anything basically) to show me how to replace the speedo drive in the gearbox. Having been advised by the local Fiat dealership it was going to cost £390 and that the diff has to come off I thought I would give it a go.

I would also be interested in getting hold of a workshop manual for the van or just the gearbox. If not available a spares breakdown of the gearbox.

Many thanks in advance.
Tim

Are you sure it's the drive gear on the diff that's broken? It's more likely to be the plastic part between the pinion and the drive cable that has sheared off. It's a small square plastic pin about 15mm long and 3mm square. Mine went on my 2.8jtd in France last summer and I had to do around 500miles with no speedo. The part can be replaced in about 10 mins if that's the problem, cost around €100 for the jtd but should be less on yours as it doesn't have the magnetic sensor. Use the eper link at the top of the page to find the parts diagram you need.
Keepwell,
Torq

Not 100% sure, can confirm everything from cable to speedo cable works, just could not see into the gearbox to see layout.

The ePER is saying to many connections etc and won't open, is there an idiots guide on here for me to use this. I have tried a search but nothign specific found.

Regards and many thanks for your help,
Tim

Ignore previous reply, found part in ePER, I have the gear with no peg just a square recess for the cable to go directly into.

Link Here

Does this initial gear (1 in diagram) pull out through the access hole where the cable bolts onto or is a matter of removing diff to replace this gear?

Regards

On most vehicles I have seen the driven gear (1) would come out with the support (2 in diagram) If not I would expect the the gear (1) would be removed by itself through the hole without having to dismantle the gearbox - unlike the drive gear (3) in the diagram.

Hi

Have now removed the speedo gears (both items), no wear on teeth, the main drive gear had slid off the shaft and therefore when driveshafts were rotating the speedo drive gear wasn't.

It is meant to fix on by the 4 prongs that come off the gear, these would spring and lock onto the shaft, these have become weak and allowed the gear to slide off.

I did relocate the drive gear and tested by rotating the drive shaft and the speedo gear turned also. I will however replace both components as I feel it would be false economy just to refit and hope for the best that it doesn't happen again.

Regards and thanks for the help.

Hi

Gear replaced, speedo now working, thanks for your help.

Fiat quoted £390.00 to do the job, I did it myself and spent £40.00 on gearbox oil and £4.00 on the larger gear. 2 hours work.

Regards
Tim
