Thinking of buying 2.8 Motohome

I have viewed a 2003 2.8 Ducato Motorhome today. I dont know much about this engine as I have had fords and mercs before, what are the common things to look for?

Is this engine made by Fiat or Peugeot?

Any advice you can give would be great

The 2.8 JTD is an Iveco engine & is basically the same engine as is fitted to the older Iveco turbo 2.8 daily. I don't know of any standout problems other than ensuring the timing belt is changed when due or earlier (around 100K) if it breaks then major engine damage will result - it is good on fuel, we get around 28-29 MPG @ 90-95 K from our motorhome

Re: Thinking of buying 2.8 Motohome

Right, my best mate ahs one of these, same year. And these are the issues he has found

Low gearbox oil, common fault stripped his 5th gear teeth, cost £580 to fix
Power steering return fluid pipe can break free and hit the alternator belt

He's had it from 5k on the clock and that's all the problems he has had. He has had it superchipped at a cost £400 a couple of years ago and it makes a big difference, no better or worse on the MPG but torque is loads better, better up hills and less gear changes.

Cruise control he had fitted at £350, saves wear and tear on your feet!

Although you must look after the fixtures and fittings! His kids have broken every possible thing from wood surrounds to a window above the cab, in the bedroom bit.

I don't think he'd swap it for anything, does well in france!

Thanks,
The one I am looking at has 20K on it and has just had a new gearbox.
It only has one key and needs a new headlight and 2 tyres, apart from that it is pretty mint.

I have a Fiat based motor home 2.8 turbo diesel, great motor, been to Spain twice never missed a beat.
My motor home is 3500kilo all up, and will cruise at 90 mph not bad on mpg either, taking it easy around 27, between 70/80 around 21.

Re: Thinking of buying 2.8 Motohome

Hi I have a 2.8 JTD Ducato and have owned it for almost 5 years. It has almost 40,000 miles on the clock and I always find it well up to its job of powering my 3850 KG motorhome.
I find that at normal diiving speeds (65-75) MPH it returns 22-23 MPG but recently I have been driving at 45-55 MPH and it does 28-29 MPG in view of current diesel prices I think I will stick at the lower speed.
Can anyone tell me please when should I be thinking of getting the cambelt changed? the handbook seems to just give a time for 1.9 and 2.3 models.
Many thanks in anticipation. Colin

Re: Thinking of buying 2.8 Motohome

I'd get it done now, 5 years is a fair enough time rather than go on the mileage as a motorhome usually covers a lower mileage, but it'll ruin your holidays if it does go.

Re: Thinking of buying 2.8 Motohome

Hi Mikey72, thanks for your interest. I have investigated further today by calling a large Fiat Commercial garage and got a very good service receptionist who checked his books for me (took about 5 minutes- so I think he did check) and came back with 5 years or 75000 miles. shame about the price he gave though £286 plus VAT. Ill be booking it in shortly. Thanks again Colin
