Hi All
New to the site so please excuse if i muck up a bit
I have a ducato 10 19td 1999 plate and what it is when you put it into 5th gear it crunches,if i change at under 30mph into 5th and double declutch its ok but thats no good when i have a full load as i need to get up a bit of speed in 4th.
I have had a quick look through past threads but seem to find different possible causes.
When i bought the van the bloke told me it wasnt the clutch or the gearbox it was to do with the cables on the gearstick, now i dont know if he was pulling a fast one or not but i am hoping some one on here may be able to help and keeping my fingers crossed that it is only the cables and not a gearbox fault.
thanks in advance bobbyb

hi unfortunatly its probably a gearbox problem the 5th gear is an add on to the g/box and what happens is that they run a little dry due to the fact that it is in an enclosure on its own and is only splash fed with oil, the syncro teeth wear away and you get crunching when you change gear, it sounds like its in the early stane of failure, the next stage is jumping out of 5th gear.you will need to get it looked at very soon before it destroys its self into the rest of the gearbox. its not a total f/up the 5th gear can be changed quite easily without gearbox removal ,budget about £300.00 inc parts + labour ..ps another cause of failure is changing into 5th to early ie below 45mph especially when the g/box oil is cold

HI Again
Thanks ken for the reply, you say 5th gear can be changed without gearbox removal the reason i ask is i have a good friend who just loves to tinker with motors as i do myself.and can probably do this our selves
Can i ask what sort of time scale would you think this would take and is it straightforward also where would i get the part from and the £300 is that for the part alone.
Am i right in thinking these engines are peugeot, would it be possible to fit a gearbox from a car or are they specially designed for this engine as i am not bothered about gear ratios.
Once again thanks in advance

hi dont know about a car g/box but it is apparently an easy job if you look at the end of the g.box on the passenger side you will see a pressed steel cap which is bolted to the end of the box thats it ,the parts are from a main dealer and cost about £120, if you do it yourself the g/box takes 2.4 ltrs of oil not 2 as it says in the books if you log onto mmm website there have been many posts on the g/box and its strange ways i will post a link to the website its free to join go onto forums click on search type in gear box and in the bottom box click and use all posts in the last year
