Hope someone can help
Have a Fiat Ducato van about 3 years old.Everytime I get on the motorway it runs hot travel about 20 miles and dial goes to red and warning light comes on. Once off motorway driving around streets dial shows engine cooling down.Fan seems almost constantly on. Having to top up coolant from min to max everyday.
Mechanic has removed thermostat made no difference.
If I stick to 50 to 60 on motorway I can keep it just below the red.
Have van booked in saturday but mechanic doesnt have an answer although is concerned it could be the head. Doesnt get so hot stuck in traffic.AQny ideas Please Help !!!!!!

Head Gasket?

Is there mayo in the oil?
Oil in the Coolant?

Definatly no mayo or oil.
Do not know much about engines but whoever I have spoken to who does is baffled. Mainly because if it is the headgasket why does it only get hot when im 70mph on the motorway. 10 to 15 miles with foot down and the dial is on red. Travelled 40 odd miles on M25 the other day didnt get above 50 got warm but not hot. So someone please help !!!!

Had the same problem on a 1.3 Polo (an unreliable hunk o' German junk [V]).

Faster you went the quicker the temp gauge needle went to the red, whereas if you stuck to below 45 mph the temperature would be OK. Also had to top up with water on a daily basis. There was No visible Mayo though.

A new Head Gasket fixed the problem :).

sounds like the head gasket cause mine just did that was stayin cool on the main roads but with high revs on the motorway/carrage ways was over heating then my car would only run on 3 cylnders so my car is now at a garage [xx(]

Currently undergoing engine sergury ... get me 100cc of oil and a new head gasket stat !

on a car my father had, with same symptoms as you, was down to a faulty water pump. the impellor was 'slipping' on the shaft at higher revs/load. fine round town but overheated on a motorway. would a compression test not reveal a faulty head gasket?

We have a ducato camper, 1.9td and we have exactly the same overheating probloem, If I keep it under 100kph it's ok but over that it overheats very quickly, the big fan is not coming on, cganged the switch but that hasn't fixed it, I think the thermostat might be the problem, as the radiator never gets very v hot but the coolant boils almost in the engine. :bang:
the radiator is not great either, the fins are corroded like someone said above, so could be a combination,

not sure where the thermostat is in this, not obvious to me anyway, and have no manual, anyone know?

Re: Did you solve Another overheating problem Im afraid !

Thanks for all the advise folks!!!! Much apreciated

I have the same problem with my Fiat Ducato Camper at 40 mph it runs ok at 50 mph it uses water. No mayo in oil or oil in the water. I have had it a t a local garage who had the head skimmed at pressure tested, cleaned out all sediment in the coolant, changed the filler cap and checked the water pump. What have they missed, please help.

Is the fan kicking in ?

You need to pressure test the header tank.

Whats coming out of the exhaust pipe?
