Hi Folks, 04 1.9jtd, front outer edge tyre wear even on new tyre fitted last week, mech says tracking ok NO ADVISORIES on Mot again done in last few hours, what on earth can it be?, a post on here has suggeted lower arms at fault even though they look ok, driver side is eating away fast, passenger much more slowly, and ideas anyone?, be very grateful. Neil.

My suspicion would be lower wishbone strut related.
On my now deceased turned into bake bean tins 05 1.9JTD Doblo I had inner tyre wear issues. Had the tracking done and no difference. I did a DIY both sides renewal of the lower wishbone struts. Got to say, although it should have been a straight forward job, it was a struggle to get the mount to align to get the bolts through on re-assemble. Also got to add that I didn't buy geniune Fiat struts so that may have been a factor. Going on, after all this I still had OFF SIDE tyre wear issue. Got a friend to put it on his MOT testing ramp and he advised me that the ball joint had gone. So again, suspicion pointed to my DIY fitting or maybe non geniune quality. I paid £32 per side. The replacement strut pair kit included the non removable new ball joint and mounts with bolts and rubbers.
For other reasons, my Doblo was scrapped and I replaced it with a Mk I Ford Focus. The Focus was also eating front tyres so I got a mechanic to do a private job for me and replaced both the front struts. Although advertised as OEM parts, can't say if they were geniune Ford. That was 5 months ago and 6,500 miles later (I do a 60 mile a day work commute) and touch wood, front tyres are wearing evenly across the whole face.

Thanks for your replies retro and jakey, just looked on eurocarparts at those lower wishbones, and it didnt bring anything up, I presume they will need doing both sides aswell?. Neil.

Personally I would do both sides to be one the safe side.
Maybe one of the guys who know the correct procedure for how to do these replacements will be along to advise.
IIRC I think I done the ball joint connection will the ARB located and then struggled doing the inboard mount bolts. Maybe it may have been better to do the ARB location, then the inboard mounts and finishing up with the ball joint. Perhaps pushing the strut up with a bottle jack so the ball joint is aligned in a squarer position before finally doing all the bolts up
But as said, maybe somebody else can advise. Not sure if there's a 'How To Do' sticky somewhere on the forum.

Thanks to you three for your replies its v much appreciated and thanks for the link for those parts they look v good price indeed. Neil.

There are a lot of threads regarding tire ware :( if you look.
We had 3 1.9 Doblo's they All ate tires replacing lower pans did not cure track, camber, castor, different make tires neither 5to 7K a set was average
Regarding AR bar if I remember fit lower pans don,t tighten metastatic bush till full weight of van is on wheels, at the same time you will find AR bar is a lot easier to put in place

I read that getting it tracked dead ahead cured the tyre wear, does anyone know if this is true?

5_7k is all I ever get out of my doblo front tyres and it's a!ways the front edge that wear .every time I go to the garage they say the tracking needs adjusting but it never stops the tyres wearing. I have had the van from brand new in 2003. I never buy expensive tyres any more just get the cheapest as the most expensive don't last any longer on a doblo .
