So the whistling noise i was getting is not the wind rushing through a window seal or the roof rack, as its bloody doing it idle!! Its loud enough that i can hear it easily over the engine from approx 5 metres away.

I take it this means boost leak? noise is definitely coming from the bottom of the engine, so i guess this means the inlet pipes around the turbo/intercooler?
There is also a loud hissing noise coming from the rear-left of the engine (as your standing in front of the car). Is this normal? thought it may be a natural noise of the high pressure pump? my experience of diesels is very limited, to say the least.

1.9 JTD, yes?

Hissing noise from rear left definately a wrongun.

Whistling noise... turbos *can* whistle, but...

If I was you, just to cheer myself up, I'd take the covers off the belts and have a good look around, and be happy that the belt was sound looking and the noise wasn't coming from the belt / water pump area.

If it isn't... then yes, more than like a boost hose or summat... time to get that boost gauge fitted ;)

Have you got the plastic under pan cover still on yours? If not, have a check of the steel pipe that runs along under the intercooler - it can rot through and gets smacked by all sorts. Mines in a s**t state (though thankfully sound) and I've treated it with rust killer and painted it. The whole lot is getting a length of foam heating pipe insulation whacked round it on the first dry day we get to try and protect it.

yup '07 1.9.

No under tray at the front, it has taken a whack to the front end at some stage in its life just to make working on it that little bit more 'interesting' :bang:

This whistling only started last week. that metal pipe does look a bit iffy though. What could whistle from the belts though? Ive read something about a vacuum pump? is that belt driven?

My feear would be that what I thought was a "whistle" or a "hiss" was a frayed timing belt hanging on by the skin of it's teeth.
Thats just me. I had a timing belt go years ago on a Rover my ex missus ran. After it destroyed itself at some traffic lights (thankfully - she had the nippers in with her at the time) she said "Ooh well it had been making a funny noise for over a week but I didn't think anything of it..." :bang:

Anyway, I digress... I'd just check it because I can't think of anything from the top left hand corner that should make a hissing noise.

You've got the timing belt, and you've also got the alternator pulley up in that direction - either of which will make you an unhappy bunny if they go on you...

no its still doing it. Im pretty sure its air whistling by either a window seal or the roof rack though. Ive not noticed the noise at idle again since.
