I've got an intercooler. :)

I always thought, rightly or wrongly, that I had a 105bhp 1,9JTD.

However, ePer shows no intercooler for my Doblo under it's VIN. Which it identifies as a 105bhp.

Did 105's come with intercoolers? For some reason, I thought that only 120bhp 8v JTD's came with intercoolers?

Can anyone throw any light on that for me? I've had a Google and I can't come up with anything...

Well... I'm still not 100% sure to be honest :D

However, British spec ones apparently came with an intercooler for that year ('04) so... probably Euro ones as well?

I don't know. I does feel extremely pokey for a 105 at times. I had a JTD Scudo a year or so back, so admittedly, I'm basing it on what that could do.

I'm just wondering whether someone in the past has put something different in it to make it drive like a 120 rather than a 105. maybe a complete engine and ECU.
For instance, it's history is as a Stadtwerk van - ie it was owned by the council - and as they do, they'd thoroughly maintained it. I mean, everything was done.
But... in the time honoured fashion, there's a key taped round the ring under the steering column, that doesn't fit any of the locks...
I'm taking no notice of the performance figures in the handbook, but I've done a GPS'd 180 Kph in it, and it wasn't out of steam at that (I bottled it ;) ze Polizei are no fun when you get caught 50 over the top on a Brit licence :eek: )
I reckon there was another 10kph to go if I'd tried.

So..... I dunno...


(180kph is about 112mph)

Im not entirely sure why its needed, as all the boost seems to come in very quickly and nothing much really happens after 2500rpm! so im guessing its quite a small turbo, producing low pressure.

is yours the same?

Id wondered if i actually have something wrong with it, its so peaky at low rpm and then so flat higher up the range!

In my car experience (saab turbo's, as the name suggests!), only the higher output cars, that used larger Mitsubishi turbochargers got intercoolers, the lower powered models with Garrett units, fed directly to the engine.

It's funny you should say that... I have a definite "sweet spot" at 2000-2200 - presumably where the turbo kicks in - it will pull like the proverbial train between 2200 and 2800-3000, and then it does feel a bit as if the boost tails off a little bit - or at least, doesn't pace with the revs (if you know what I mean). I'm talking a definite "Ooomph" at 2000 - being silly on a damp road, I can actually chirp the tyres changing up into second if I time it right.
Theres no way it's running out of steam, but something happens - it doesn't "feel" as if it's the equivalent amount of boost being produced further up...

I have been toying with the idea of shimming the waste-gate operator out with washers, to see if I can make it stay closed a bit longer. Don't know whether peeps think thats a good idea or can suggest an alternative..?

PS: I've ordered a boost gauge, more out of interest than any kind of Ricery. It had crossed my mind that I had some kind of leakage, even though I can't hear any whistling / farting noises.
 
So my soopa-doopa boost guage is on it's way :cool:

But.... I've googled and searched the forum and I can't find a description of where to take the pipe from for it.

Obviously the best place would be the inlet manifold, but I'm not keen on drilling and tapping that without taking it off so I can clean it - what with swarf getting sucked into the engine not sounding too bright an idea - and I really don't want to get into that right now.

Is there a pipe we can cut and T away from?

I'm stumped - I can't find any descriptions or pics, except relating to an Alfa 20 valve, and I'm not sure whether that will be the same :confused:
 
there should be a dump valve/bypass valve/what ever Fiat call it, somewhere near the intake pipe. It'll have small bore hose coming off it, presumably one of those runs to the intake manifold? If so, stick a T-piece in it! :D

Looking into it a bit further, I think what I might do is have the "throttle body" off.
I'll eat my hat if it isn't full of schiess anyway, so it can be cleaned, and the inlet manifold also as far as I can manage without taking it off.
That will then - hopefully - give me enough access to drill and tap a brake bleed nipple into the inlet and hoover any swarf out.
A bit more elegant than a T-piece, and a bit more accurate as well.
 
I'd love a cheeky intercooler on my Doblo van.

The one fitted to my skoda is "above average" size :slayer:
